Condensed UI
So I've finally been able to do some testing/playing on my phone, an HTC Inspire 4G, and I ran into the UI problems described by Vectravsix in this thread.
After re-reading a few of Incarnate's replies I finally found the answer I was looking for regarding the condensed UI.
By Incarnate: The condensed UI is created specifically to solve these problems. You can still access the Ship & PDA tabs, you simply have to press the Android "Menu" button. It actually describes this in the initial tutorial, but for existing Android users who have been testing older non-phone-compatible builds, you wouldn't be forced to see that.
I had actually tried puzzling out if there was a way to access these features by pressing various other buttons, such as the "Help" button. Perhaps it's because I'm still fairly new to so-called "smart" devices, that I didn't think to try pressing any of the phone's buttons. I fall into the category of existing-PC-users-experimenting-with-Android and hadn't taken the Android tutorial yet, choosing instead to load a character I had already created that was in the training sector.
I'm not sure I have a solution, but I wanted to at least raise the point that it could be helpful to have some sort of indicator to the use of these phone buttons like back and menu.
Maybe a setting could be added to the config.ini which would be checked when PLAYER_ENTERED_GAME fires, and displays information pertaining to these buttons.

I guess the issue is that we attached the "menu" button use description to the new-character tutorial, perhaps we need a more generalized popup (modal dialogue).
