The command is xgamma: I use xgamma -gamma 1.3 .

The correct setting is related to your monitor and video card: try with http://www.dpreview.com/images/grayscale.gif : you should be able to see the difference between all the greys only changing brightness and contrast in you monitor. Only if you are not able to do it, you should try changing you gamma.
