Ubuntu Unity Dead?
Greetings!
Last night I installed VO, and when I ran it the first time it dropped my Screen Resolution down to (what I'm guessing) was 800x600.
The game never launched, and I couldn't change my screen resolution back. I was forced to drop to TTY1 and reboot the machine. When the system came back up I logged-in as usual...but now I have no "Desktop". The Unity launcher is gone, as it the top menu bar.
I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS + 2 LCDs @ 1080p + nVidia GTX 750ti
Any suggestions on how to get my machine back to normal? I've tried dropping to TTY1 but my screens power-down as if there is no signal coming to them. I am able to execute commands, as I can exit TTY1 and / or reboot the machine by typing the commands.
I did not install the game as Root. It's installed in my /home/(me)/bin folder.

If you read the two threads below this one, I had a similar issue. At first when I ran the launcher it would just freeze up. This I resovled by changing the permissions on two folders in the .vendetta folder. Both Settings and Manual folders did not permit access so I had to change that.
As far as the defaulting to 800x600, this magically dissappeared for me when I switched from the onboard wireless connection on my laptop to a wired connection.
Hope this is useful.

I saw those threads, and I'll look into changing the permissions on the folders. My resolution reverted back to 1920x1080 following the reboot, so that's "fixed" as well.
I guess what I'm mainly looking for is advice on how to get the rest of my Desktop back. Eg) how to get Unity back.
I've read a few things online, but nothing has worked. Was posting this here in case anyone else had this issue when running the game for the first time.
When I log into my Desktop, I get nothing but my "background". Nothing else. "Ctrl + Alt + T" won't even bring up a Terminal.
Any advice?
*fingers crossed*

No clue about Unity. I have no idea how Vendetta would have even affected that since it saves all of its files in ~/.vendetta and doesn't change anything else.
Yeah, IDK either. I was just pinging this here in case anyone had run into this issue in the past. With Vendetta or some other game.
*sigh*
Oh well.

Check all the log files, particularly /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I'd also ask on the Ubuntu forums or maybe IRC.
Yeah I'll have to see what I want to do.
If I boot to what used to be my desktop, I can't open any programs (not even Terminal). If I drop to TTY my displays go "silent".
Short of pulling the drive and looking at the log files, IDK how to view them.
Thanks for replying with suggestions. =)
This is pretty much the end of the road, I guess. Should I ever resolve this issue I'll update this thread for future reference.

Since even your VTs aren't working, I'd guess there's a video driver issue...

Correct. the blacked-out TTYs are an nVidia known issue. I logged into TTY1 and ran:
export DISPLAY=:0
sudo ccsm
Went back to my desktop and Unity was unchecked in CCSM.. I re-enabled it, and all of the requisite addons. Rebooted and still nothing. The settings were indeed saved in CCSM, but it's just not showing-up in the desktop environment.
Then decided to reset all Compiz / Unity settings. Still nothing. IDK what else to do, short of reinstalling Ubuntu.
About out of time for this week. Will try again next week. Thank you again for your input. The gesture is sincerely appreciated.

Have you tried starting the computer with only 1 monitor plugged in ?
Assuming 1 monitor doesn't change the problem then I assume it's a nvidia driver issue where you login and end up at your desktop backround screen but nothing else
This is a driver issues, happens all the time when people get new nvidia cards. Logs into incorrect resolutions, or just backround or black screens etc; and with no unity at all.
I almost forget exactly how to fix it but it's something like this
When you see the grub screen select the restore or advanced menu option. This will take you to another option screen, then select networking and let it finish it's routine, takes you back to restore screen. This time select prompt
From the prompt you can now remove the nvidia drivers
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
then you could either install the exact version aka 331,338,443,446,448 etc or nvidia-current
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
or
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Then reboot, one of these options will get you back up and running
I have no doubt it's driver related same exact symptom I had when I upgraded from a low level nvidia card to a 650ti, then it happened again after I upgraded to the gtx 970
Had to google around to remember what I did to make it work again.
OH, one last thing regarding the 970/980 support
The steps above won't work unless you first installed the newest cuda toolkit for 970/980 support
This info is on the nvidia site but also a short instruction is found here too
http://www.r-tutor.com/gpu-computing/cuda-installation/cuda6.5-ubuntu
However, I only stopped at sudo apt-get install cuda
I did not change other variables etc.
But if you experience any graphics issues you could try the additional steps too
Happy hacking
