obtaining verbose output (random segfault)
I've been getting random segfaults, but without any useful info to report back or to try to troubleshoot on my end.
How do I get verbose output, or find some other means of troubleshooting?

vendetta does output the trace into errors.log when it segfaults
Well, I looked at the errors.log file after my last segfault and it contained the following, as the last 5 lines:
[Sat Oct 25 14:22:06 2003] ffffff1 second to logoff...
[Sat Oct 25 14:22:06 2003] 8080ff<CannonFodder> oh yes
[Sat Oct 25 14:31:07 2003] ff0000<[syn]n00b> sorry
LoadGKMeshes: Can't load 'ship_roboship_001_hull' in 'gaf/ship_roboship_001_hull.dfs'
[Sat Oct 25 14:31:24 2003] Galorin destroyed [NPC] Alzoran
nothing I can do about that aparrently...

Try uninstalling the software and deleting the directory (ie "rm -rf ~/.vendetta" in linux, delete C:\Program Files\Guild Software\Vendetta in Windows) and reinstalling.
I'd been getting similar errors ever since I first downloaded Vendetta, not that long ago really...
Well, I tried switching distros a couple days ago, wanted to give gentoo a shot, but didn't RTFM and wound up wiping my system completely... effectively uninstalling Vendetta. After redownloading, the problems still continued. As I'm on dialup, this is no small feat.

I don't mean to criticise your hardware, but are you sure it is 100% stable? I have seen many occasions where segfaults are really due to unstable hardware not software. Can you do a major compile without problems? eg the linux kernel, gcc, or glibc?
Criticise away Kastin. The PC that I'm running vendetta on, I picked up for £20 plus the retail price of the DVD drive I stuck in it. This PC is a mish mash of leftover parts from my trusted retailer, a Matsumi motherboard, and 192 megs of RAM. When I bought it, there was also an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, accompanied by a 650 MHZ proc. Today I'll be doing ome swapping and reconfiguring to better balance the computers here.
This PC currently has an Aopen 32 meg graphics card in it, with a TNT2 chipset. I lso swapped the 650 MHz for a 1 GHz proc. Both of these components came out of a PC that blew it's power supply and motherboard when their kid switched it from 240 to 110 volts on the UK's 220 volt power system. Ouch. So my PC may not be in tip top shape.
My RedHat 9 tower server has custody of my 64 meg Geforce 4 MX 440 card, and that's a waste which I intend to remedy. I wonder if that motherboard will boot without a graphics card... This server is also a known stable system, giving so far abouut 98% uptime. If I need to do system-intensive loads like GIMP for print quality work, compiling, etc, I ssh into it and use that nifty (but unsecured) xhost thingy.
I'll try running Vendetta the same way after swapping hardware around and putting $HOME and my printer on the server. But before I can get around to that I need to do my weekly backups. Self-employed, and these are my business machines, pretty important to my livelyhood.

that was interesting.. running Vendetta on the server while using xhost.. the game played without any hardware acceleration, and was too choppy to play for very long. <shrugs> the new release is out, so I'll see if the problems persist.
<update> the system I installed Mandrake on is unstable. It crashed regularly after the update. The server (former gaming machine) plays it flawlessly, and without knocking graphics to lowest settings.
