Ubuntu 11.10 64Bit with Nvidia GeForce GTX 275

Hello all,

I have a Fresh Ubuntu 11.10/64-Bit install with a Nvidia GTX 275 video card. When I start the game, I get crappy performance and only the reference driver to choose from. How can I improve this?

Thanks,

The reference driver is all you'll see in Linux (I think Windows users might get to choose between opengl and directx or something). Note that that driver has nothing to do with your actual video driver which is used by the OS, which is what I will talk about next.

Make sure you have a decent video driver installed and configured in Ubuntu. It needs to be one that supports 3d acceleration AKA DRI, as opposed to the "nv" or "vesa" drivers which do not. Personally, I'd recommend using the proprietary (but free) Nvidia driver, but if you want to stick with open source, get the Nouveau driver. Nouveau is likely to be more glitchy than the proprietary one though, at least for the near future. Then again, I haven't tried it in a good six months, so perhaps it has improved already.

Consult Ubuntu resources for directions on how to do that, as I don't use Ubuntu myself.
