Weird Flicker Crash

Aug 20, 2003 crazydeb8r link
Hey everyone -

Running Mandrake Linux 9.1 and I'm getting a strange crash. I have an NVidia Vanta (ack) and the most recent drivers, but when I play vendetta the screen flickers then dies without an error message or Bug Reporter. I thought I could edit the config.ini file, but can't find it. what should I do?

You need to revert to an older driver. This same issue occurs on most older nVidia cards with the latest driver. It's all over nVidia's Linux forum and it happened to me on a GeForce2 MX test box.

well GeForce2 GTS with the newest driver works fine...

I know it's a bit off topic, but does TV-out work right under 2.6.x?
I get crashes and hangs when using TV-out no matter what nVidia driver I try.

GeForce 4 Ti4200 (Asus V9280/TD) on Debian Sid
Newest nVidia driver, XF86 4.3
Works like a charm.

GeForce4 Ti 4200 on Gentoo works fine with the newest nvidia after kernel 2.6 patch is applied.

No clue, this is a desktop and doesn't use TV-out. Besides, doesn't the program nvtv have more to do with tv-out than the kernel?

nvtv is hosed/borked/broken here :/ It's either my driver or my kernel.

I really want to play Vendetta on my TV (32" TV, while my monitor is 17" CRT)

(Yes, I am trying to yank this back on topic ;)

Ok, where can I get the older driver?

NVIDIA Archives?

Demonen: I don't think it'll WORK without nvtv. Compile nvtv from source or something. I have nvtv on Gentoo with kernel 2.6test-bk4 and no crashes.

did Vanta come before or after the TNT?
Sep 07, 2003 Turmoyl link
The Vanta is post-TNT, but based on TNT and made cheap as hell.

From nVidia's site:

---------------------------------------------------------

The NVIDIA Vanta™ is a low-cost, 128-bit TwiN Texel, highly integrated 3D graphics processor, designed specifically for value-conscious users. Leveraging the NVIDIA TNT architecture, NVIDIA Vanta delivers breakthrough 3D and industry-leading 2D graphics performance, making it ideal for today's basic desktop PC. The NVIDIA Vanta comes in 4-16MB configurations.

---------------------------------------------------------

4-16MB?!?!?! TNT rather than GeForce architecture?!?! Integrated?!?! This is by no means a modern gaming card. Not to be mean, but I am genuinely surprised you've ever actually gotten Vendetta to load on it.

You can pick up a GeForce 4 Ti model starting around $125 US nowadays, or a GeForce 4 MX for around $75 US. I strongly suggest that you upgrade.

Vanta was first made in 1999 or 2000.... I have a comp made in 2000 with Vanta.
