Is anyone able to get xbindkeys to pick up keys when inside VO? VO seems to eat all my keys...

The problem was occuring in full screen mode. This isn't directly VO's fault. I guess all full screen games would suffer from this "problem." You can toggle fullscreen and windowed mode with ALT+ENTER. If you're in space, you need to get the game to give you a mouse cursor, so either enter the interface or the console (~) and then you can move the mouse off screen. At this point any shortcuts will work.
