yes, you can only use 1 sound app.

I have no other sound app running.
The problem seems to exist since the 3.2.11 update.

Not So. I am regularly running XMMS while playing. Background Music is good....

heh, you lack proper sound threading. make sure your running the latest and greatest oss/alsa-oss emulation. 8)

Don't forget about hw and sw mixing. For example, I know that on a SB Live!, alsa will do hardware mixing in some cases. But on other cards, well, no dice.
