Problem with Ubuntu 8.04
the install worked great (had to put the bin folder in the home folder) but now the updater runs/updates and then vo just doesn't run i think its due to the 800x480 screen but even if i set the screen resolution to 800x600 or even 1024x768 I still have the problem

It's your eepc.
Its not Ubuntu 8.04's fault, I'm also currently running Ubuntu 8.04. It's your fault for using the wrong driver for the EEEPC's GFX card. See the Device section? It should look like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device1"
Driver "intel"
VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"
I do not have an EEE PC, so I could be wrong, but I have read several guides on the net, and not one of them mention this. but the EEE PC wiki does :-

Oh yah, and don't throw your EEE PC away when you get sick of it, sell it! Or it might kill you!
