AFAIK most gameport and usb sticks just work. The only popular one that seems to have issues is some freaky saitek thing.

Can't really give any suggestions. If you want to go stick only you'd want something that lets you strafe comfortably though. I use an a gravis firebird 2 which has a small keypad type thing built-in. But it's pretty old.
