Cheap PC & Distro ?
Hi, Can anubody advise ?
My question is, I was thinking of having a machine dedicated to VO, as there are lots of cheap DELL/COMPAQ/HP boxes on eBay, I thought, well, buy one of those, stick Ubuntu on it, bang it on the router, leave it connected 24/7...Lovely.
So, lets say I get a Compaq/HP D530 (P4 2.8ghz, onboard sound/graphics etc) what distro would be best suited to the box AND Vendetta Online ?
Would I really need better Graphics chipset or sound ?
Sorry about this, I would have liked to post this on the Linux thread, but you know....
Cheers, Threlly

I believe that you need either a NVidia or ATI card if you want to do any kind of 3d gaming at all. NVidia is preferred, as their driver support is better, and easy to install (I've never personally tried an ATI card, always been happy with Nv).
You could probably get a card for $50 which is plenty capable of running VO, but like I said, I highly distrust the onboard gfx.

Cheers, the only issue is that getting cards that will physically fit the SFF HP boxes is a trick in itself, and I don't want some huge air conditioning unit style PC in the room.
What about a good distro ?
Ubuntu ?

For Linux definitely got with an nVidia card, ATI drivers are dismal and will cause you much suffering. I had an ATI card in the past, and would not wish to inflict the pain it caused me onto my worst enemy.
As for distro, yeah, Ubuntu will do you fine. If not, try Fedora, Mandriva, or Suse, probably in that order. If none of those work you are probably doing something wrong.

Thanks,
I have tried Ubuntu in the recent past and got on quite well with it.
Just need a small quiet form factor PC now, its either build from scratch, shuttle style of el-cheapo HP box.
But it will have to be able to host the GPU too.
Decisions, decisions.
