OpenBSD + VO? - Other Linuxeses?
I just got permission from the wife to get a dedicated linux box. I like OpenBSD, but does anyone know if it gets along well with VO? If not I've seen a recommendation for Gentoo. Are there any other favorite flavors of linux out there?
Does OpenBSD have something like FreeBSD's linux compatibility stuff? If so it might work. Somebody got it working under FreeBSD a while back.
And about linux distros. I only have experience with slack, really old redhat and ubuntu.
If you want something easy to get along with give Ubuntu a try.

If you're more comfortable with the *BSD, I'd suggest Gentoo, too. Its package manager, portage, is supposed to be based off of the ports system that *BSD uses, from what I've heard.
I use and like Gentoo very much. There is a lot of work involved in setting it up and compiling all your software..
Hi,
If you're still undecided you might wanna take a look at this: http://bulk.fefe.de/scalability/
It doesn't really matter what distribution you use, as long as you are familiar with it, and if you happen to like the BSD port system that much, you can still use it on linux (http://pkgsrc.org).
Anyway, if you wanna stick to OpenBSD and Theo, you gotta deal with the Linux compatibility layers, just as spuck said.

I have FreeBSD 6.1 (BETA4) (I'm sure 6.0 works exactly same) and Vendetta works off the bat with no problems. Sound, gfx all is ok. As long as you're x86 with nvidia drivers in FreeBSD all you have to do is install the game normaly (the script will work ok) and then go to your ~/bin and "brandelf -t linux vendetta" this will tell your FreeBSD that the elf binary is for linux.
You need to install linux binary compat, there are many docs about that. You'll after that need to install linux-libgtk12 which is available from ports. That's about it, just don't forget to set linux compat in your nvidia settings too when doing the driver.
It works flawlesly for me, connection is ok too.

I've had success with Ubuntu (for the most part) - nice if you want something fairly easy (and debian based).
I've got to stand up for slackware ;)
The packages might not be the newest, many things you'll end up compiling from source (checkinstall is a nice tool unless you want to dive into the slack build scripts)... However, I really can't think of a time when something just didn't work under slackware. Very stable, somewhat conservative, a very proven base. Currently I'm running Zenwalk linux, which is a slackware derivative (and a very nice one at that).
Have a couple years experience with Gentoo, seemed to require too much maintenance. Quite a bit of experience with Ubuntu, which is nice, but it just wasn't as responsive as other distros.

This is great news! I am switching from OS X to FreeBSD, and I look forward to playing this.
