Vendetta updates but does not start
From a fresh install of linux (latest ubuntu [gnome desktop] with latest nvidia drivers [using apt-get, not manually]), I downloaded and installed vendetta. I can run it, the updater will start and download the latest patch and update itself, etc. Then, when it tries to actually start vo, it hangs.
Top shows no cpu activity, although it does show up as a current process. This also happened in xandros when I installed gnome. Could there be something in gnome stopping vo from launching? If needed, I can post my xorg.conf but it's pretty standard. This happened with both a radeon 7500 and my nvidia gforce 4 mx 4000. I have no idea what's causing it.

Sounds like exactly what happens when the audio device is blocked. Try a killall esd (or any other sound server) before starting the game.
Still nothing. From a fresh install of vo (deleting ~/bin and ~/.vendetta and rerunning the installer), I can do one of two things:
1. Run .vendetta/vendetta, which will open the app and let me configure it, but of course not connect to the server since it's not updated. If I do this, I get "Bus error" if I run bin/vendetta afterward (or .vendetta/update.rlb).
2. Run bin/vendetta, which connects to the server and dls the update fine, but then will give me the same problem as before.
I am a bit lost here :/

The audio device is probably blocking, as mr_spuck said. Kill esd or esound or whatever.
I did, but it still wouldn't create the window. I downloaded the installer again, though, rm'd everything and reinstalled. Now it's working again. Must have had a problem with my copy of the installer. That's the only thing I changed for it start working again. Wierd. Thanks you for guys' help.
