tweaking (simplified)..

Hello!

I found out, all graphics settings won't do a big difference, except the texture resolution!

With set to high a get a little to low frame rates, in version 3.3.x it just worked fine in 16 bit. (not anymore, even slower in 16bit)

What I would like to have to get the best results: a possibility to just set texture depth to 16 bit (and leave screen depth at 32 bbp).

And do you already use compressed textures, or would that be a possible enhancement? Maybe even an option for turning that on/off would be great!

And did you already optimize OpenGL code with the free Mac OS X Developer Tool: "OpenGL Profiler"? That also makes a lot of sense, Blizzard made Warcraft 3 nearly 20% faster within an hour or so (with that tool)

Please, please just bring us back the performance of earlier versions of vendetta! (if better, it'd be even better ;-) because at the moment a lot of fun gets lost because of the low overall frame rate.

Especially the mac version needs a good optimization, because only the very high end Apple models suit a really good 3D accelaration, the low end stuff (most users have) hasn't really much 3D power and most of them only 32 MB of graphics mem! (Maybe Altivec could help? - today most macs have it) - please help!

Thanks a lot!
greetings,

PS: Strangly the old versions seemed already good optimized and fast (i even had a fluent gameplay (and was very happy about that) on my old mac G4/450 with only Geforce2MX, I can remember)

Bumpmapping and background detail make a pretty significant difference too. But texture resolution has the most noticeable effect. That and distance detail settings.

Hello. Actually the Backgorund detail does a very little difference on speed (about 1-2 FPS). And distance detail absolutely no difference. I just get more polys per second, if turn it to more detail.

And bump mapping and other effects do also no differnce... :-( I guess I can't even see bump mapping here maybe (GF4MX)

I just need 16 bit and/or compressed textures, so I can play it fluent with high res textures, as in earlier versions.

Or is just the whole mac port a little broken?

Well, everything I mentioned makes an appreciable difference when it comes to Framerate stability. Move your ship around while looking at roids under /toggleframerate graph to get a better representation of what's going on. It should stay relatively flat. The framerates get really erratic for me if I set the above mentioned values too high. It could just be my antiquated video-card though.

You should be able to see bumpmapping on the grey asteroids at least.

The optimization of the mac version is dependant on apple's gcc compiler. It doesn't seem to be the best. But really, I think the problem is that Apple's OpenGL driver kinda sucks in the more recent versions of the OS.
