DX
I glanced through the DX vs OpenGL thread, and really skipped over most of it, as I really don't care as long as the game runs (which means I'd prefer OpenGL, I guess). :-D But wasn't DX coming to mac? I remember seeing some news stories about em at MacCentral, IMG, and Macgamer... anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Hah! When hell freezes over. I'd still be reluctant to use it simply for the fact that Microsoft makes it. Blegh!
There was a group of people making a port of dx to mac. The dx thing is basically a wrapper for opengl to make it look like dx, I think.
Are there any other APIs besides DX and OpenGL? Rave and Glide are the only ones that come to mind. Ohh.... I just answered my own question. Uhhh... anymore?
PS: Would Microsoft even allow a port of DX to Mac by anyone but themselves?

They wouldn't allow anyone to use the name DirectX but i don't think they could prevent someone from making a compatible thing.
It's like Mesa back in the day when they couldn't get the OpenGL certification so it was just touted as an OpenGL-like api.

Yes, someone is porting the Direct X API's to OpenGL for mac. I think it's called MacDX but I'm not sure. Either way it'll be a boon to people who want to port windows games.
/me points to WineX and mumbles something about Win32 dx compatibility. The thing is, winex is NOT an emulator (duh) and therefore requires a hardware x86 to run. So to run it on mac the designer would first make an x86 emulator, then run a variant of wineX on it. Probably.
Err, DirectX has nothing to do with x86. It is an API for graphics cards. Very seperate things. Do you think that a mac uses a different Radeon 9800 than a PC would? Of course not. They both go into an identical AGP 8x slot. WineX does the same thing, except for Windows API's.
