Optimizations for Panther/G5?

Jul 14, 2003 haharich link
Apple is in the process of posting a new compiler at the developer site (http://developer.apple.com/tools/macosxtools.html) that should allow for quick optimization for 64 bit computing. I'm curious if Vendetta is going to get the 64 bit treatment?

We don't really have any reason to do so, and it would cause it to not run on older machines. I don't feel like making cpu-checking code to determine which path to take.

Also, I tried the latest compiler and they fixed a compiler bug I submited but they added another bug that makes the game not run. So I am using the older compiler and I had to disable optimizations for collision-detection to get it to compile. When that problem is resolved, the game would be a little faster but I don't think using 64bit stuff would make the game any faster.

anyway, don't you need a 64 bit prossesor to make an app a 64 bit one, or am I missing something?
/me had lots of liqur filled candy today...

Umm, while a 32 bit app runs on a 64 bit proccesor, you can't run a 64 bit app on a 32 bit processor.

I also doubt vendetta would get that much of a boost from 64 bit-ness.

Don't worry, the devs aren't dumb. They'll make vendetta use as many bits as it makes sense to. ;-)

Plus, I know there's at least one Apple employee who plays vendetta like an addict. I'm sure it gets tested on all the latest builds of Panther, and lots of different machines.
