The sneak preview features get a "Meh" from me. Time Machine and Spaces look good, but just not $100 upgrade good.

Didn't you pay attention to the Keynote? Jobs said that a bunch of the new features are "top secret" and under wraps until closer to Spring '07. I'll bet there's some rather natty stuff classified there...

i agree lemming. it looks like the unix nerds are taking over apple, with the 'wow look, 500 3d screens on one screen' garbage that they have been pushing for, like, 5 years on linux. nobody gives a crap. 'spaces' is something that was an addon for windows 3.11 back in the early 1990s (and on X / unix before that im sure)

they should concentrate on making it work properly, and do properly the things it is supposed to do, and make those stupid commercials actually match reality. and stop using sweatshop labor.

Ah cork it, Ananzi. Every time you screw something up with your computer we need to hear a tirade about how much Apple sucks ass. There are four million Mac users in the damn world that are NOT having your problems.

GOD I'm tired of reading your bleating about this OS. If it bothers you so much then go back to using Winblowz and rebooting every half hour or call technical support, but mindless bitching in this forum is as pointless as it is puerile. I've watched two people try to help you and seen you snarl at them for their courtesy while you blame everything on the operating system. Grow up.

My Mac works fine. I've rebooted three times in the last four months, and one of those was when the power went out. Maybe you should start looking into actual reasons why you're having problems instead of pointing fingers. No one else on EARTH seems to be having the same problems you are.

Stop using sweatshop labour and clean up their business ethics! Oh and start utilizing some more environmentally friendly standards. They're terrible for that.

Yeah, Time Machine looks cool. Though, here's what I think of Spaces...

I've had Desktop Manager running since... probably early February of this year on both of my computers. Makes me a little confused why Apple couldn't put such a useful feature in the OS much earlier when I can get a fully functional (yes, it's alpha, no, I haven't had a SINGLE problem with it since installing it) equivalent app from a third party, though...

mskanaka:

i will explain it all. there is no need to be confused. the great ananzi will describe in excruciating detail the factors behind the lack of 'virtual desktop' in OSX and address your theory of 'if some hacker can do it why didnt the corporation do it years ago'.

when you are a volunteer hacker on the internet you can publish stuff without caring too much if its going to crash someones machine or if it is going to work properly on all machine configurations. the ones who use it will be 'early adopter' people who dont care if it breaks, and besides you told them before hand it might break something.

when you are apple you have to care if it works or not on all the machines you are supposed to support.

when you are volunteer hacker, you can spend your time doing whatever the hell you want. but in companies workers have priorities they are working on... which in general are supposed to somehow serve the customers. but in the case of virtual desktops, most people will not find it a 'useful feature' ... they will be like 'what the hell is that, oh.. nice toy' then never use it again. if "virtual desktops" were such a desirable feature by most average users, then they would be in a lot more products, since they were invented 20-30 years ago, and have had 3rd party addons since the 1990s on windows for example. many other things from the 80s/90s were adopted and spread to , basically, all computers and even cellphones. these include things like picture icons, drop down menus, 'task bar-esque' things, mice with three buttons, scroll wheels, etc. while all these things were being adopted and mainstreamed, virtual desktops are still a niche market for certain users. in fact the 'dock' in OSX/nextStep could be considered an attempt to eliminate the need for virtual desktops by basically creating a 'task bar' type of device that had far less clutter than windows or linux taskbar.

funnily enough, a 'virtual desktop' in OSX kind of breaks with apples 'keep it simple' tradition. it is possible there have been factions within apple discussing whether to add a virtual desktop or not for many years inside the company, and perhaps only recently the unix idiots.... i mean the wonderfully insightful pro-virtual-desktop folks, have won out.

the end. you're welcome.

Untrue, or at least not verifiable. Just for the record.

Hm. Looks like more useless crap that I won't use.

I've never used Automator, I hate Spotlight, and I can't remember ever using a widget more than once. Now they add more crap like Time Machine (a waste of HD space, making it so we can get REALLY confused between versions & revisions of files) and the Spaces thing looks like it's gonna replace Expose, which was the one feature of OS X 10.4 that I really liked. I don't use Mail or iCal, so the changes to those programs still don't interest me.

Core Animation sounds like more work for developers, kind of like when Apple released Quartz.

I just upgraded to 10.4 last month, I'm going to wait a good long while before upgrading to this. I see no immediate feature that I require.
Aug 10, 2006 Snax_28 link
Ditto. 10.4 is the shiznizzle.
Aug 10, 2006 moldyman link
Unless they show some better things, it's not worth $100.
Aug 10, 2006 roguelazer link
Expose is actually a feature of 10.3, not 10.4.

Core Animation means LESS work for developers. Along the lines of 10 times less code to create animations.

Is a "widget" a "woman-midget"?

(Waiting to see if anyone is old enough to make the connection... )

Luckily, I won't be spending USD 100 on 10.5, but only about USD 13 (CHF 15 precisely), thanks to the IT I study at. I'll check it out as soon as we can get it, which will be about half a year after release.

Yay for educational, fully usable versions.

There is nothing in this 10.5 preview that would make it worth my money (I have it installed on a partition). I am really counting on the secret new stuff he was talking about. What is being fed to devs and torrent sites can not possibly be even close to what will be in the final 10.5. Because what I saw so far is a joke.
So everyone sit tight and be patient. I have good hopes this one will blow us away and amaze us in the end.

Don't forget, kids, that the current Boot Camp is only a beta that will expire. You'll need 10.5 if you want to keep it around.
Aug 17, 2006 moldyman link
Well there ya go...

Apple pulled an M$.
Aug 17, 2006 Suicidal Lemming link
As far as the 10.5 features are concerned, I'd pay $20 each for Spaces and Time Machine. Sure, I can get the basic functionality of both of them for free, but Spaces and Time Machine are probably well integrated into the OS and have many UI enhancements over their free counterparts. Those top secret features better be awesome.

Edit:
I was wrong about my Boot Camp comment. The second paragraph of the terms of use states that it is time-limited.
