If the new PowerMacs are faulty then you can always exchange it. Universal binaries won't last forever. They can take up as much as twice the space as non-universal and it takes a bit longer to code.

They take up twice as much space if your application is 100% binary; that is, if it has no graphical elements at all. Text-only applications tend to be small anyway, so in the (sole) instance where you have a 100% size increase, it won't be a problem. I don't forsee Universal Binaries dissappearing for at least 5 years.

Most applications use up huge amounts of resources in art when compaired to the actual program size.

The World of Warcraft patch which added a universal binary (amoung other things) was 30MB, about a .6% increase in the application size.

But Adium X added 5-10MB up to 28MB, and it increased RAM useage. It has already been stated by some major companies that they will phase out UBs within a couple years.

Now for some benchmarks of the chip that will hopefully be used in the new PowerMacs: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1970201,00.asp

Major companies such as?

Adobe, I think.

Adobe has yet to even switch to UB yet. Where did you read they were already planning on dismissing it?!

Macologist or Inside Mac Games.

Adium X's UB release (0.88) also added a bunch of new features, graphics, etc. Go compare the binary sizes (they're somewhere inside the .app file) between 0.88 and 0.87 and I doubt you'll find a 10MB difference.

As to Adobe dropping UB, I found nothing online to indicate that. Please refrain from spreading FUD.

It might not have been Adobe. One of the major mac companies though, and I didn't see any new graphics in the release of Adium 0.88.

Got the G5 :)

Also, alot of products have yet to switch to Binary yet, so I'm not even worried. AppleWorks 6 is an example "Only works on PPC processors"

Well, GL with your G5. Maybe you can make a VO movie or something? I've been meaning to for a long time, but my current comp just isn't capable of recording and playing VO at the same time.

EDIT: It would be cool to film a nation war.

That's what I was intending :)

If my computer can't let me fight and record at the same time, no one's can. It'll be more likely that I'll just let 10 people go at it and film from nearby.

Moldy you went and bought the G5?

Yes...
