Best Video Card for under 300 bux

Apr 12, 2006 Snax_28 link
Someone tell me! I need:

Digital Video out
128mb Ram
S-Video out

I'm thinking about the 9800, but I've also heard a lot of this Nvidia is better than ATI banter lately. What is the comparable Nvidia card?

Any suggestions?

There's a severely limited set of cards you can get for a mac.
I think the Radeon 9800 is your only choice unless you can find a place that sells geforce mac cards.
You also have to make sure you get the right adapter type (AGP or PCIx)

Yeah, sucks eh?

Thanks for the info though.

Search Froogle for Geforce 6600 Mac. That card is better than any of the ATI stuff up until about the X1600.

Have to be careful, though. I think the 6600 (which is available on the Apple store) is a PCIx card and not AGP. I don't know which macs support PCIx.

Try looking around at the Strangedogs forum at http://strangedogs.proboards40.com/index.cgi . They sell GeForce 6600's flashed for macs there.

Any of the G5 towers do PCI-X.

G4 and G3 towers do not.

iMacs and Minis don't have card slots.

So if you have a G5 tower, you're good to go.

6600 is PCI-Express.... the first G5's (which I have) are PCI-X. Only the newer gen G5's have PCI-Express. The same? No. Confusing? Yes. Idiotic and shortsighted of Apple to take a gamble on a technology that no one ended up using? Yes.

Hrm. You mean like NuBus and Newton and eWorld?
I'm sensing a pattern...

Wait, Newton was cool. The world wasn't ready for newton and got scared away by the 1.0 release (OMP).

Ok, decision time.

Or the X800 XT?

For comparison, Bare Feats has run the two cards (yes, the hacked one) against each other.

Thoughts?

Probably my biggest issue is which one is going to provide me with better performance on the Apple Pro App side of things, specifically Shake and FCP, now and in the future. I have heard that GPU heavy processing is the way of the future..

I dunno about on Macs, but on PCs, a GeForce 7800 will always beat an ATI X800 XT, and is only compared to ATI's X1600 series. Also, if you ever want to run anything besides OS X (ie: Linux), then you really would be much better off with the nvidia.

Anybody with any experience with Tiger's Core-thingymajig and how it relates to Pro Apps, perhaps with some insight into the future of Apple's Pro Apps?

Also Rogue, while that may hold true for a PC Version of the 7800, and even perhaps for the PCIex version of the 7800 for Macs..... it would appear that this AGP version is not that much better than the X800, and in fact slower when Core-thingymajig is concerned.

But that's only one test.

I think the core stuff is optimized for the ati radeon cards, but i may be wrong..
