graphics screwed up on laptop

Jan 21, 2005 ArAsH link
hi, being a mac user, i don't have that much experiance in windows. I was trying to install the trial on a friends laptop, because he is allso very interested in playing VO.
Now the problem is:

Vendetta starts, but automaticly minimizes to the dock when the resolution of windows and vendetta are not the same. You can hear the music playing tho.

When you put windows in the same resolution as in wich vendetta starts (800*600), then then you see the rotating station, but the graphics are all screwed up (pointy triangular spikes sticking out at all sides, as if it was exploding) and there is no menu for starting.

At this moment i don't have the specs of his laptop, but he is going to mail them to me and i will update this post with them when i have them.

At the meanwhile, anybody happen to know what this might be??? devs??

It's pretty clear that it's a video card issue. It's hard to be more specific without system specs. He should be sure he has the very latest drivers. He could also change resolution of his computer to match VO, then he could see to reset VO's resolution if he needs to have his computer's resolution set where it used to be. I'm confused just typing that.

That sounds oddly similar to an issue I was having, and still do, to an extent. For some reason the game seems to dislike certain DirectX settings- I'm using the DirectX8.1 driver since the DirectX9 one seems to have mysteriously stopped working. However, the OpenGL driver has always worked, so try manually editing the config.ini file so the game will use that one (just hope the laptop has the OpenGL option- I've noticed most laptops are notoriously bad for compatibility).

Try finding the line in the config.ini file that reads:
VideoDriver=DirectX8.1 GKGL driver

And change it to:
VideoDriver=OpenGL Reference GKGL driver

And see if that works. If it doesn't, try changing that line to any other video driver choices listed in errors.log- with any luck, one will work.

Well, that sort of card isn't quite as bad as using a very tiny korean to draw every screen, but it's close. Try to find the DirectX diagnostic program- it's named DxDiag.exe, and should be located in the "C:\windows\system" folder. Go through the tests, ignoring anything that says "not approved by Microsoft Hardware Quality Labs" or whatnot. You just want to run the Directdraw and Direct3D tests, and check to see that the DirectX version is 8.1 or later. If the tests fail, you're probably SOL. If DirectX is outdated, grab a more recent version from MS's site.

And, of course, shoot down as many other tasks as possible to minimise possible conflicts. Some virus protection programs and firewalls don't play nice under default settings, and may be interfering with the game program. Since I don't use the latest version of windows, I can't say exactly what tasks are system-critical for anything past Win98SE. However, cutting things down to "Explorer" and "systray" is about the minimum I can achieve, it may be similar with the laptop. Worth a try, anyway, but be warned that doing so will leave the system vulnerable. Reboot is your friend, use it well.
