black screen...

Apr 16, 2004 taumuaddib link
OpenGL did end up working, I finally figured it out.

It takes much longer to load than directx does on a comporable machine my friend has, but oh well.

Hopefully the logs will help show if anything is broken, or whether directx is truly locked down on the machine.

In either case, thanks for the help guys.

After running Vendetta, take a look at the errors.log, directx8.log, and openglerr.log files to see if any of those have any error information.
Or after running Vendetta you can run the bug reporter and submit a bug. That will send us those files and I can see if there are any errors in there.

Late, but i have INFO!

Ok, so, the directx8.log was the log with tons of errors. Here is what I have:

The last numbers (0[1]) change every now and then, the validate device error repeats for pages. I wish I knew what conflicting renderstate meant :(

Ok, can you email me the directx8.log file please?

From what it looks like, it failed to be able to render polygons at all which is very very strange.

Yup Ray, I will drop you a line from my webmail account tomorrow (monday). The machines are 1.x Ghz P 3/4s with a Geforce 2 MX and eitehr 256 or 512 mb of ram. I really don't like them, so I avoid checking the specs too much ;)

Thanks a bunch

Some schools usually have some kind of protection software on them. I've even seen some of them lock DirectX down in order to provide more "security" and prevent students from playing games on school PC's. You might try editing the config file to use OpenGL, but no promises. Failing that, you may want to check the video drivers, if they're standard XP or 2k, they'll probably suck pretty bad, and need an upgrade, for the GF2 line, I've had best results with the 44.03 driver set. You can still find them on nVidia's site in the archive section.

yeah, um, I'm getting this bug too, whenever I start vendetta, everything is black until I either switch to fullscreen, or kill vendetta and restart it. Weird

alienb1212: What video card do you have? When this happens, can you submit a bug report so I can see your log files?

Radeon 9700 Pro, with the newest ATI drivers, the 4.1 cats.

I could not update the driver because of stupid rights and such. I will try making a local admin account later and see if that works.

I can't get a screen to display no matter what, restarting it or not though.

And how do u change it to opengl in the config file? Im not quite sure.
Thanks for the help so far :)

open the config.ini file using a text editor such as notepad and look for:
VideoDriver=DirectX8.1 GKGL driver
and change it to:
VideoDriver=OpenGL Reference GKGL driver

OpenGL is not good on Windows. It's bumpmapping isn't as good, nor is the rglow effect. That's the only reason that I like to play on Windows. :P
