Using an Xbox 360 Controller

Jul 27, 2010 Napolean link
So i searched the forums and didnt really see any other threads with explicit instructions, I really only saw one other with someone who uses a 360 controller to play. Anyways I would like to do this and Vendetta wont pick it up as a joystick. As far as I can tell ive got all the drivers. Does anyone know what im doing wrong, can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I do not think xinput is supported by VO, so errm, does the other person you are referring to use Windows? For clarification, imcase you don't know what xinput is, most game controllers use Direct Input, a part of Direct X to interface with games, Xbox 360 controllers *do not* use Direct Input, they use xinput.

Oh well in the process of trying to set it up, I realized I need an actual wired 360 controller, all of mine are wireless with charge cords. I could get a reciever but its all just a big hassle.

My main thing is, ive tried playing via mouse and keyboard and it works fine on bots, but there is definently a time delay in pvp. I will pull the same manuevers or close to it, but about 3 or 4 seconds behind the other person. Are there any good joystick or controller systems that you would suggest?

To be honest, no matter what game controller/joystick/dual joystick setup I try, I always end up falling back to keyboard+mouse in the end. But to share some info:

I used to use a PlayStation 2 controller via a USB converter, it worked real well for dodging, but aiming was a bit hit-and-miss, defensive was the only way I could fight with it, which although fun, it's not my style.

I tried (very brief) a Cyborg 3D and some crap second joystick for a bit, as a dual joystick setup. I preferred a gampad with hovering above the keyboard to be honest. Maybe I needed a better second stick, but it did work well.

Never tried a wireless Xbox 360 controller, but the wired one I have doesn't work with VO, in Windows without using some 3rd party app/driver. In Linux it of course works, because it *is* using a 3rd party driver. But I prefer the Playstation layout in a gamepad, and prefer mouse+kb overall.

Sticks do feel more like flight though P

I believe there is some info about using an xbox controller on the wiki. I think Elvisclone used one of those for a bit.

Since there appears to be no gamepad support yet, it may be possible to declare to windows that your xbox360 controller is actually a joystick. You will probably need some sort of third party program or driver in order to do this, although it may also be an option inside the xbox360 controller options in control panel. I'm personally using keyboard mouse and it seems to work okay, although a rumble controller support might be good too, maybe with the main d-pad/joystick rotating the ship, big (tab) thrusters and brakes on x & a, guns on the two triggers, and fast look around on the lower right d-pad/joystick, maybe put some other options on the left d-pad, and use y & b and the other two top buttons for menu or other stuff, along with a little rumble on main thruster and lots of rumble on hits, maybe proportional to damage. Note that off brand controllers also typically have vibrate, it doesn't have to be xbox360 gamepad specific.
