Antialiasing issues with DX9

While checking various things because of the storm fps drop thing, I became aware of some issues with antialiasing in DX9.

This is aa off:

Nothing fancy or strange. Jaggies and all, 60fps.

This is aa level 1:

The fps stay at 60, the look is better, but only marginally so.

This is aa level 2:

Much better AND the fps stays at 60; I'd use this setting BUT look at the letters, they are all fuzzy. I've tried to play like this and promptly get a headache, it affects all screens, both in space and instation.

This is aa level 3:

This is the setting I currently (try to) use; the fps have dropped by half but everything looks nice and the fuzzyness of level 2 is gone

Finally, this is aa level 4:

Looks almost the same as 3, but it is much resource-intensive in reality. The storms are a clear example; a storm with aa 4 gives me 12fps, while aa3 ups that to 20.

However, while doing these tests I found an even bigger problem: the moment I exit the video settings dialog window, the aa resets to level 4, on its own, unless I chose off. That's right, the only really usable levels right now is off or 4. This didn't happen before (is how I tried to play with the fuzzy level 2, only I got lazy to report it back then). I can choose any level between 1 and 3, click apply, and see the changes, but the moment I hit OK and the dialog leaves, it goes back to 4, which can be seen in the quality of the picture and/or the drop in fps. Immediately returning to the video settings window confirm VO has set my AA back to level 4.
