homing in on a chat transmission
when i used to play mtrek (text based star trek game in which the player controlled a ship) it was possible to home in on the signal of a person who was chatting. it would give you a bearing and i think the ability to intercept (see other post). i believe that this would be a nice little addition to vendetta.
1) if the ship you are tracking is in another sector, then only the sector number is given.
2) if the ship is in the same sector, then his bearing is given. or perhaps he is auto targetted.
just a thought...

I agree.
I'm hoping that eventually tons of enhancements to your ship become available, but we will just have to be patient.
Did you ever play any of the Btech MU* games? I'd like import the ideas of IC chat system from those games lock stock and smoking barrel. It would also be cool to equip your ship with a radio descrambler to randomly intercept messages from other teams.
Btw, mtrek was great. :)

prohaps a tool avalible only to those of the "neutral" (pansy) nation. Or maybe those of the N (P) nation who have a bad rep as being murderers would make it better, because i for one dont want everyone to know where i am when i wander off with a flag.
Flag? CTF won't be available in the "final" version. I think one of the devs mentioned this in IRC. Unless they were lying.
They have said it several times. CTF is only temporary and for our enjoyment, it is not "representative of the final product", as they are fond of saying about EVERYTHING in vendetta test.
It's just there so we have something to do besides kill each other. Not that that's bad... It's my favorite part... Especially when I'm in a bus... :P
ok. let me change it then. I dont want assholes stealing my hard earned cargo that used to be yours. the cargo i am now moving to where ever i think it will sell best. Sound good? If i pirate you, i dont want you to find me untill after i sell your cargo.
I think the process of figuring out when to release a message to a moving reciever would be more trouble than it is worth. However, scrambling a message as it reaches the limit of reciever range is completely doable. In fact, it was done in the Btech Mu* MMORPG's 10 years ago. Garbled text works just fine.
Well... if you want to stay hidden and people can home in on chat...
DONT CHAT! Would a space pirate really have open communications channels to his friends while he was flying around with hot cargo? I wouldn't.*
Think of submarines hunting each other... running with silent engines and total radio silence and all that... it could add a great element to the game I think.
And of course, to resurrect the old topic of clouds and nebulas and stuff: those things could all affect your ability to home/hide/etc adding even more game play possibilities.
* I'd send a carrier pigeon :-)

well, what if i want to stay hidden and chat? maybe a sigl;nal muter or smething that changes the radio/hyper electronic signal sender's signal so i cant be traced.
Well, I'm hoping eventually that OOC 'chatting' will occur only in stations on OOC channels that can't be heard by ships 'in space'. I'm hoping eventually that ships in space will have limited range, and that people will talk on the radio about semi-IC issues most of the time. Nothing is worse than a complex and wonderful MMORPG being reduced to a chat room. If you just want to hang out and chat, go to the 'lounge' in station.
If you don't want your messages to be heard ICly, you could use 'narrow beam transmissions', the equivalent of /msg so that it was less likely that you would be heard unless the eavesdropper was between you and where you were broadcasting too.

Ooo... There should be a factor for transmission speed so there's a time delay... It could take ten minutes or something for a scout's message to reach the fleet, and it would be a little garbled or something... If we get voice chat, the garbled part would work even better... Ooo! Text chat could be like morse code, less garbled but slower and harder!
+1 to all chat showing your system/sector, and making you show on radar to everyone in the same sector for 60 seconds.
Holy necro batman.
Heh.
Please do not necro threads.
