Cargo Computer
So you're trying to remember if you bought silksteel for 20 credits higher or lower than tha price you're currently looking at. In the age of computers, do you really think that people are painstakingly writing it all down or trying to keep it all in their head?? Why would the game force you to do that?
So here's the suggestion:
Players should be able to buy "Trading Computers"
- start out with a real simple one available to 1st level traders that just remembers what you bought any particular item for and then lists that price next to the item when you try to sell - Bingo - instant feeback on profit or loss.
- Next level up computer not only does that, but also remembers what the prices were and what was available after visiting a station. So when you are ruminating on what to buy at station A you can look up what was available at station B and C (and what you sold it for there the last time).
- Next level up can accept "data modules" that have info on other sectors. You can buy these from a station, or, better yet buy the data from other players that have visited other places (price determined by how much, how recent, and how unique the dataset is from what you have in your own computer).
I'm sure that people that have played the game for longer can come up with more ideas on this topic...

Heh! I agree. I think that you must have visited the stations, and if the station prices change, the data on your Trading Computer can get stale - it could be date stamped - but to have a slowly growing idea of what can be bought and sold where and how much one paid for cargo to estimate profit would be good to do "in game" rather than with pencil and paper or a 3rd party website.
What if two people that had the "Trade Computers" could input each other "ID" (this would have to be set up someway) then they could swap inventory if they were posted at the same station, or if they were within visual range of each other in the same sector?
I have heard of the troubles right now of paying with cargo for services.

Could also have a guild setup to allow all those in the same guild to share the same trade info, and would be easier to keep updated as it would be the total of the whole guild as one, as opposed to just an individual.
