I see a red door and I want it painted black
Though I don't want a jet black ship, I would love to fly a very dark gray ship around. The current selection of very light grays saddens me as I try to create a truly frightening pirate ship. (Do not flame me because you don't think I'm a pirate.) The unpainted areas on ships should take care of the few problems I've contemplated:
1. The issue with being able to see ships against the backdrop
2. The ability to reserve a very nearly completely jet black ship for some truly evil organization or orientation.

Well, more customizeability is needed and planned anyhow.
Look at city of heroes, really the only draw to that game is the sheer range of "looks" for your hero. Other than that, its all point and click.
This is the kind of thing that could also be dealt with by a very active community of guides. Guides that could change affiliation (from serco to unaligned, etc..). Until these kind of changes become systemetized and standard, why not give these powers to guides, to endow guilds that asked for them.
Make guides into DM's of a sort.

If you are some evil pirate, maybe your ship should grow horns!!! :D
yes, black ships are nice. I recall someone mentioning that black ships will probably be rewards for completing missions, but don't take my word for it please.
as for now, any really dark-colored ship (dark purple/blue) can make you look practically invisible in some space.

The guide functions are all command line and involve an undestanding of Lua for anything other than the simplest of tasks. It's not pretty. At minimum there would have to be new info and permissions given to the guides, though frankly I'd be annoyed if I was to have to type in all the Lua stuff each time the wind changed and someone wanted to belong to a different nation. An actual guide interface is needed in order to deal with that kind of volume.

hmm... well there's the suggestion then. Lets give guides more power, and they will help build the story. A guide interface seems reasonable.
If anyone here has played RPG's on paper, (in this crowd, I'm sure quite a few. I haven't in a very long time) the great fun came from the genius of the person leading the game. Its what made it better than any RPG computer game. This, more than any set of extra medals or ships is what will keep people coming back.
It would also be the first MMORPG, in my knowledge, to take that approach. Real storybuilding will attract players.

Agree with Shape.
The draw of any game once you get past the whiz-bang graphics is the plot/story. Good characters help build this. If the guides could act as "Game Masters" then the game becomes richer and the story gains "depth".

How about it FM [et al]? Are you guys up to the challenge? :-D
I kinda answered earlier in regards to what was specifically suggested.
Some of us have put a few little things together here and there, but there are many limitations we are up against. We have discussed this internally and hope to have a little more flexibility in the near future.

But you must admit, they REALLY did that one thing well. So well, it could almost make up for the pathetic lack of gameplay.
Then again, I started getting bored with the game after four or five hours of play and I can't imagine paying for the game. My brother though, whose a more casual gamer, is something of a fan - though I think he probably spends as much time thinking up new looks and trying different play styles out as he does actually playing the game.

Hi, I just wanted to specifically respond to the "dark ship" question. I mandated that the ship coloration not get too dark, because there's a specific faction, not yet integrated into the game, who uses all-black ships. Should users be a part of this special faction, I want their appearance to be unique.
Other, more unique ship skins for certain conditions and accomplishments are also something we want. The existing coloration system is not cast in stone, we can tinker with the colors further.. but now see you my logic/intentions at least.

*but now see you my logic, hmmmm*
Kinda, but you do see my logic? hmmm...

It's obviously the fabled 'Black Atlas Brigade'. The UIT heroes of old mentioned in the backstory who wrought terror on Serco and Itani alike with thier mighty black death Atlasies.
Why, what were you thinking it was Shape?

Incarnate,
I understand why you might want to have a new faction be recognizable because of the weight they carry in the backstory. But if only they can chose black, then why can itanis and sercos BOTH chose red and blue (and yellow)?
Gavan wishes he could be unaligned.
