Answer to the Dueling Problem

Feb 21, 2005 exDragon link
Since some people who duel you might run away so they don't die, then in should be made so that dueling deaths and dueling kills do not apply to the current statues catagories. There will be a new catagory that could read:

Dueling
won/lost

That way, if somebody runs away in a duel, they will score a loss and if somebody dies in duel, they will still score a loss. This will make running away pointless.

Better yet show how many times they "retreat" this way the player knows how honorable they are. OR to be even more cruel. When ever they jump out of the sector their ship is automatically blown up :) that'd be interesting.

There diffinitely needs to be some sort of adendum to the pk list to show win/loss ration for duels.

I don't agree that if someone leaves a duel to heal that they should automatically be blown up, but, they should be given a "loss" in the duels kill ratio, in essence surrendering. Unless of course you want to institue more types of dueling, such as "first blood", "to the death", "first to red", etc. and gave some kind of combat xp "bonus" for winning duels other then the normal kill xp.

And something that I think would eleviate a lot of the whining I've been hearing would be to institute an "invulnerability" to outsiders of the duel. I'm sure it's been mentioned before but I think this would really solve the issue best. (That or stop dueling in the middle of an active combat zone).

making dueling players inveunerable to someone outside the duel has its own problems.

here is the first exploit that comes to my mind.

2-traders set up binds to challenge/accept duels with each other, then make every jump at the same time. the first thing they do when they enter a new sector is trigger thier binds, making themselves inveunerable to pirates.

a second set of binds created to abort the duel could be used just before they jump to prevent either one from having a "loss" recorded in thier duels.

even better : same bind, approach a transport in CtC, disable duel, kill transport, start duel.

well if you got rid of the disable duel command, and made it strictly an on-till-a-winner-is-decided means then those that choose to exploit it that way would have to take a loss in duels. Though I understand that invulnerability is worth the low rating. There has to be some way to make it work though, or something like it.

If you just want a way to make sure that duels don't get interrupted, a sort of marker could be added to the radar or target box of a player involved in a duel. That way, people can see that there is a duel going on, but no potential invulnerability exploits. The usual "duel interruption" can still take place, but will probably only occur in the case of someone who genuinely just wants to annoy both people anyway.

It would be wise if people wanting a duel would fly far from the wormholes, or preferably to an empty sector.

I like the idea of a marker though. Their radar blip could turn um, orange? Even many of the worst pirates will avoid interupting a duel so long as they know ahead of time. It's nice to have duels in semi-public areas too where lots of people can watch.

just don't sit and watch in Sedina B8, it's not safe to sit there, someone will come and kill you while you watch! Better to move over a sector like FM suggests. Let people know if they want to watch to follow.

Ya I do realize that it's more fun to have spectators, but there's two behavioral issues at work here:

1) Some people have a fragile ego and can't tolerate dying at the hands of another player, whether the death is recorded or not. Even if they run off they can tell themselves they still outwitted their opponent.

2) Some (few) people are jerks. If they can get others really angry by interfering in a duel, they feel they can control others in some way. (This does not apply to those who accidentally get involved in duels.)

Sneaking off to an undisclosed location would eliminate problem #2,and some of the other suggestions may help reduce problem 1.
