Engineering (new skill tree)

Feb 11, 2005 UncleDave link
It seems silly that the repair weapon is left out on a limb. Some pilots I know tend to enjoy grabbing a repair addon for CtC, but so far there seem to be only two "support" L port thingies available, and none for S ports.

So why not have another exp tree branch from a nominal fraction of the amount of damage repaired by such weapons? And as you level up, you'd get new stuff with which to repair and boost and support your comrades with. Akin to the "White Mage" of Vendetta, you'd be able to deliver fast and effective pain relief on the battlefield.

Start off with a really crappy S port repair gun at level 0, gain the L port one at level 2, and along the way up, gain the addons to link battery regen with other players, reload specific types of weaponry, drop mines which repair your and other ships, launch destructible repair missiles/drones, get something similar to CP's AWACS bird thingy or whatever it is, and eventually gain some semi-offensive devices which drain enemy batteries or knock out guidance systems.

There have been ideas in the past for "search+rescue" missions, other mission types like "provide intel for NPC convoy" or "emergency field repairs needed for patrol X in enemy territory" could add points to the tree.

This, like mining, would hopefully add a whole new type of player to the game, and bring out a sense of camaraderie (no, I can't spell it) in those huge battles we anticipate later. :P

sounds great to me. It would be nice to have a whole mechanic skill tree, so that your "repair guy" wasn't just some schmuck who picked up a repair gun.

A high level medic/mechanic could have access to very fast regen options, allowing him/her to make their side MUCH stronger. Instead of currently, where it seems that the mechanic is just a guy with one less gun.

The only problem I can see is in getting experience. But, given special repair missions, I can't see this being too much of a problem. Especially if you don't get much xp for repairing someone. (If you make it so that you cannot get experience for anyone that YOU damage, then leveling a comrade would be a long process, which would involve a few people, Like with roids, you could have the repair xp dry up if you repair one person for too long.)

And what's wrong with people using their friends to level up? its no different than med students practicing on cadavers.

I usually don't kill my friends, and then do research on their dead bodies ;)

but yeah, i generally like this idea, as it would help create a new type of players ingame.

That, and there's that weird bug that marks you as an enemy on radars when you repair people.... bug report submitted.

Let's also have a duck hunter role for people that like to use the flechette!
And a docker role for people that like to dock instead of typing /explode!
And a cleanup role for people that like to run around collecting cargoes from mining fields!
And a station-miner role for the people that like to mine stations!
And a physics-user role for people that don't like flight-assist!
And a billboard-reader role for people that like to read billboards!
And a roid-rammer role for people that like to kill asteroids with their ship!

I mean, in one easy glance at a characters 1/2/2/1/3/5/4/3/2/2/0/1, and you could know their entire history!
This person, for example, isn't much of a botter, but happens to be a fair duck-hunter! He also likes to dock most of the time, and does quite a bit of cleaning up! his station-mining time, however, is a bit low, and he uses arcade most of the time. He's too lazy to learn waylonics, but he did do a bit of roid-killing, Maybe that was while he was a noob.

Who'd have guessed that it would be genka that would find a use for the flechette after all this time?

At least he's stopped trolling and finally put up some good suggestions.

actually, I wouldn't mind a duck hunter award.... That'd be fun.

Good suggestion UncleDave... I'd imagine that crafting tools would also someday fall under the Engineering license.

I like this idea.
