How about an add on like there was in the old EV game. A "Cargo Pod"

been suggested and is in the main list of ideas already, hopefully they'll get to it some day.

This was in the original design spec for the Marauder as I recall. Other ships may have had something similar planned, but I can't recall exactly. I suspect it's still somewhere on the "to-do" list.
