Mining Beams
I'd like to propose a few new mining beams. Right now as you go up in level you get faster, more heat efficent mining beams, which is good, but i'd like to see some variation. Perhaps a Slow, Extremely efficent beam, or a very fast, high heat version.
Something Like
Heat Deflection Beam
Rate .7
Heat 0.1
and
Strip Beam
Rate 5
Heat 4.4
The first would be for players who are mining for cash. taking some time to extract the mineral without heating up the roid would allow for long term mining of the same asteroid. You could get a faster return with a different beam, but long term you get more units of ore with the first one.
The second one is for those people who just want to grab a few ores in a hurry, you wouldnt be able to use it for long because the heat buildup is so intense.

These are great ideas.
I would even like to see a beam that could cool a riod. I would take along time (about the same time it takes to heat the riod up) but it would let you cool it back down faster then waiting for it to do it by it's self. Or maybe it would be slower but you could use it on the same riod as your buddy is mining, making it heat up really slow.

id just like to say that one thing i have grown to appreciate in vendetta is the subtlety of the upgrades. i feel the numbers you propose are too large a change from the existing beams.
Borb: I am against cooling beams. I can just see too many exploits availible for them. (there are places where you can find a 99% heliocine roid, put 1 miner with 2 helio beams on it, and he gets 2 friends to cool the roid., our miner can gain Xp almost infinitely, all he has to do is jettison the cargo every miniute or so. makes leveling mining far too easy.
Ananzi, the numbers are just to give an idea. Ideally the slow beam would mine at about the same rate as an advanced beam at 75K temp, but heat up the roid slowly enough that it could be used for a long long time at that speed.
the speed beam i just kind of threw in there. the point is that the game has no real variation in the mining equipment, once you are to level 4 all teh beams work just about the same, the only difference is what special mineral they pull.

*bump*
I was searching for other mining stuff, and found this. I really like the idea of a very slow, but very heat efficient beam. The strip mine beam might also be nice for quicky mining operations in Hive infested sectors.

I agree that both new mining beams (ideas) would be great, though the numbers may need to be tweaked a bit.
Strip Beam: Range 150m; Rate 5; Heat 3; Mass 800; Level -/-/-/-/9
Clean Beam: Range 50m; Rate 1; Heat 0.2; Mass 800; Level -/-/-/-/10

wow this is an old post. lol
I actually prefer that we exhume the old posts like this if people are adding to them (as opposed to just bumping things, which is annoying). It saves us from having dozens of threads that say the same thing over and over again and gives us access to a wider range of perspectives.
Heh. I could REALLY piss people off by using the super-heating beam to increase the temp of their favorite roids to 2 million K.
There's always a law of unintended consequences.

remind me to never share my roid locales with Leber...
great ideas, and I really like LC's balance of them =)

Leber's on to something here. It would be like marking your territory. I can't be around to mine the roid for a few days so I'm going to heat it up so no one can use it till I'm free. Evil yet so pure.
hehehe You do that and I'll go around heating up all the helio roids to billions of degrees K.
That should get ppl more racing oriented (I CAN"T MINE THERE"S NO GOOD ROIDS!).
WOOT!

Or, alternatively, that will get us all busy mining (different equipment, admittedly) the heck out of your favorite tracks. Guess which is more likely.
[EDIT] Heh heh, indeed Spell. DLSR (http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/7/10576#123065) is still utterly untouched, in so far as I can determine. /me lovingly mines his massive, uber-Helio chunk.

i defy you to heat up my pet helio roid boxcar. If you can find it, you can heat it. good luck.
