Painter Beam
I would love a beam that fits into a small port that i can use to paint objects on my radar. So when im doing mining or prospecting, I can paint the astroids that i've scanned or mined on so they appear on my radar as a tiny white star or something like that. This would also be good if your mining and looking to mine a certain type of ore.. you can scan them all, paint the good stuff, come back with a centaur equipped for mining (or which ever ship you like) and get to work on the painted objects.
This is yet another variation on the theme of 'I need a way to mark waypoints in a sector'.
Why is it than when someone posts an idea like this, invariably 3-4 people will start the very same thread within 24 hours?

Well i dont know, i was just playing and thoght of it. So excuse me of it's already been suggested. I didn't read any other post with this idea.
It's okay gamejunky, but for the future you should read the pinned/locked post at the top of the forum

which lists all the suggestions which have already been discussed.

'all' is a lie.
It only lists about a tenth of the topics that I, from my elitist highpoint, consider to be very, very flat horses.

Perhaps this could be used in a new scanner. It would still work the same way, if you select a target it will show what's in it, but you could press the fire key to "paint" the target selected.
just drop one of the things you looted and get another and then you have your marker, it's really not that hard. If your looking for something that no one else can see, mine in an uninhabited area.
actually, you can sort of already 'mark' roids.
if you carry a small mining beam along with your scanner, you can heat up the roid a little bit, to 10.5k or something, and come back later with a better ship.
your temperature indicator has a greater distance than your scanner, so when you come back in your centaur, you can look around at the roids, find the '10.5k' one amongst all the 10k ones, and know where you should go. combine this with 'landmarks' , like a spinning roid, or a big cluster-roid, and you can kind of mark your place.

now, if we had 'infrared filter' for our HUD, this would make it even easier.

ananzi True, but that would require you you to select it! :P Could go out in a Centaur full of food.. drop one unit near each rock you scan.. but jeez.. lol. And the IR Radar filter sounds like an awesome idea .. but only for mining. My original post was related to Mining and Prospecting.
its not an 'ir radar filter'.
its an IR filter for your visual screen. like in 'predator'.
----
prospecting. i think like this: heat up some roids around your 'nice rock', come back later with the IR camera.
----
im just trying to twist things around so that this is not a 'waypoint' thread.
