Mining

Ok, i tried out mining this weekend and i think its pretty relaxing except to some problems:

mining laser range:
100m is a bit too less IMO because theres a problem with jettison the cargo which forces u to fly forward to not pick up the stuff u just threw out again. another problem with that 100m limitation is that its VERY difficult to mine a rotating roid because the point from where it measures the 100m is not in the middle of the stone, so if u r standing on one point ur distance to the roid gets from lets say 50-150m, but u cant stay at 50m because the roid would kill u with the next rotation (happened to me).
so u always need to fly forward and backward to stay in range which is pretty annoying and dangerous.
and i dont see any problems with 200m range mining beams ?
i also thought that higher lvl beams would have a higher range but they all have 100meter limitation.

another thing i noticed were the roids in hostile sectors (with bots that will attack u while mining).
i scanned some roids while flying through it (ion storm) and although there were difficult assault bots there, the was quite normal stuff to mine like ferric and carbonic ore.

btw it would be nice if there would be some wrecked hulks out there (which would be pretty rare) and u could find nice stuff in it like weapons or mining beams, just stuff u cannot buy at stations.

oh and about the mineral scanner:
it really would be nice if this thing would be a DEVICE which fits in an extra device slot. like i said in other posts, device slots and devices for those slots would open up a wide range of possibilities (like mineral scanners, extended hull, extended shield, deflects for various types of dmg etc. etc.)
maybe u think about device slots after u implemented the bounty system ;)

Mining rotating roids is a great way to learn to control your ship.

Start with mining a static roid and run circles around it, slow at first, keeping a constant 50m distance. Once you get the hang of that, speed up.

After some time, try the same with a rotating roid. If you have the hang of running circles around static roids, running circles around rotating roids isn't that difficult. You'll be running circles faster then the roid rotates, so the roids rotation doesn't add that much difficulty.

last, try mining a rotating roid without moving away from the spot you're mining. matching your movement to the roids rotation.

why on earth would you fly around a rotating roid. they rotate on an axis. Find the "north" or "south" pole and hover over it.

Actually, some of them rotate on two axes. This means that there is no pole and you need to keep moving. I found a neat 72% xith roid that rotated on two axes. pita to mine, but it worked out okay.
