no soltis, botting is not a measure of skill. I never said it was. However the amount of TIME it takes to level DOES need to be a factor.
No matter how little/much you like it, this is still a MMO. GuildSoftware DOES need to make money off of it, which means keeping people playing the game with goals that take time to be reached. Adding other missions and giving us more to do will eventually make that time spent less boring by giving us things to do that distract us from the fact that we ARE spending the time.
Having everything reachable inside the first month is a bad idea for a MMO, because once you have "beat" the game, boredom begins to set in. I tend to agree with you in your argument that time spend does not equal skill, however if disguised properly with more content, it wont be as noticable.
You and I agree totally on your second to last paragraph, because everything you suggest is simply a way to disguise the time spent in game.
When there are PvP rewards for missions that set up specific Player vs Player conflicts, they can (and should) be higher than the corresponding reward for a mission against AI opponents.

I actually said you thought time played was a good way to measure effort, not skill. You get my point, though, and I get yours, so no need to natter about it.
However, I want to stress that you and I are seeing this from logical 'opposite ends.'
You said of my post, "You and I agree totally on your second to last paragraph, because everything you suggest is simply a way to disguise the time spent in game."
You are working from the basis that if you add content you'll 'disguise the time spent in game,' while I work on the basis that if you add content, people will want to play extensively.
In an ideal world, your and my perspective would converge, but my experience with MMO games is that working from one perspective or the other will slant the way the game feels in one way or another, eventually resulting in a game which is endlessly interesting, or endlessly tedious. Exceptions exist, I'm sure, but few and far between. This being said, I would rather end up with an endlessly engrossing game, so I believe aiming for that, and assuming the time-consumption aspect will take care of itself, is the appropriate course of action.

Sorry you found it hard to follow. i reread it and yea, it was difficult to follow.. I tryed to go into to many things at once.. was just tired.. but anyway.. guys lets try to keep this on the topic at hand.. some people are going off on tangents that arent even about the topic..
Again im not saying it has to be anything as substantial as the bonus for X ammount of bots.. but something to help move it along just a little faster..

Wow, this is a very deep debate. We're directly touching the heart of the problem here, and I think Soltis (and others, too!) made a number of good points. I'd just like to illustrate it a bit: now that I have my 8/9 combat level, and that my hand is but a uselessly hanging mass of pain ( http://jesrad.free.fr/lotsabots.jpg - I could have used another way to rise combat XP, for sure), that I have more cash than can be spent, what is there left to do in the game ?
- I could train in PvP and ultimately participate in the neverending CtC (except I'm not good enough for that and can't choose sides)
- I could go out and prospect until I get the medal, but that hardly appeals to me :(
- I could tyrannize newbies, burn their ships, loot their cargo and bath in their blood and... err, not appealing to me either :/
In this situation, and being given these alternatives, I'm starting to slowly lose interest for the game. Should leveling be made longer and more difficult to extend the longevity of the game ? Should higher levels depend on pure skill and not on the time you spend pressing on the mouse button, so that any good pilot gains quick access to best stuff while average pilots have to actually train and practice to hone their skills to the same level ?

I'm not sure how, but I do like the idea of having every combat license over maybe level 4 or 5 being skill-based in some manner, so someone who is just naturally "that damned good" will be able to do it with a minimum of fuss, while it will take others a long time practicing to do the same(Sort of like those levels in old console games that you'd try and try and try, and then feel like king of the world when you finally beat).
As for your growing ennui, Chao, I suspect that there will be more things to do appearing as time goes by. I'd like some dev input on this topic, since I can see more people getting into your shoes within the next few months, if the devs don't at least directly confront this issue in the open, where us players can see their opinions and proposed strategies to resolve the issue.

*Hangs the "Attn: Dev's sign on the door"*
midnight: the devs read this forum when they have a chance. you dont need to make posts to try to get their attention, no-one is more interested in the views of the playerbase than our dev team. (they dont always do what we want if it doesnt match what they see as the future of the game, thank god, since in retrospect some of our ideas have been really really dumb)
Spellcast.. im not some novice to MMO games.. and ive told players just that that.. but for more then just a little humorous note, like when the topic is all caps and asking for Dev attention, then it turns out to be something compleatly stupid or even in appropirate at times. In which case i locked the thread. Oh yea.. I was, and still am when i want back, a Mod in the Darkspace community. its not like i can change the topic of my post on these forums anyway. I was being sarcastic.. I know they will get around to reading it. If they havnt already. Chose who you bash a little more wisely next time.
