"painting" multiple targets...

Nov 18, 2004 thurisaz link
what if, in addition to one main target, we could "paint" brackets and off-screen directional arrows for an additional three or four?

especially as more group-based content is added, this would be a better way to keep track of wingmates than just a different colored radar dot

basically, I see using the F6-F9 keys to set a ship to one of four secondary targets, much like the "b" key sets your primary target.. they would get color-coded brackets and off-screen directional indicators, and maybe small armor-status indicators either on your HUD or integrated into their targeting brackets

..secondary targets would be great for:

--the convoy transports you're defending
--your teacher, or student
--your hired escorts, or the trader you're escorting
--any other player with whom you are cooperating

basically, this is an alternative to the rampant "white dot phenomenon"... this way, you would be better able to keep track of which dot is who, **as well as being able to track NPCs in this manner**

I agree on this, and add that the biggest obstacle to this is the current targeting controls. X is handy, it selects the nearest enemy, B selects the next in front, which is a little funky, and the brackets '[' and ']' toggle through all objects (though I've seen them miss things with an obscure logic, made worse by asteroids being targetable. I'd really like target next/previous hostile controls. Maybe even a "next asteroid" key too.

After that, being able to select multiple targets would be very nice. Friendlies could be given green brackets and vector reticules, while secondary hostiles could perhaps have orange. I'd also like to see homing missiles pick up on the next hostile target if the primary is destroyed, or maybe even target you if they're heat seeking and there's no one else around.

...and if you fired a swarm, the missiles would split off and each track separate targets.
