mining + guild or faction benefit
What if the volume and type of ore mined positively impacted a guild or faction related to how one of the future/proposed game elements such as capital ship and station building were acquired?
For example, if a particular guild mined several thousand (or tens of thousands of) units of ferric or carbonic ore, then perhaps the total cost of acquiring/building a new station would be lessened far more than if the ore was simply sold and the cash used to buy the station (the cost of extraction by a third party is removed, etc.).
The same concept could be applied to capital ship acquisition, changing the type and amount of ore.
<edit> A faction could benefit by having certain station-sold items become far cheaper due to the influx of raw materials used to construct that item. This concept would apply to like-faction stations/players. So, the more that folks mine, the potentially greater trade advantage on faction may have over another, i.e., goods bought cheaper bringing greater profit when sold. </edit>
This concept provides mining-focused players with the opportunity to dramatically impact the ability of their guild/faction to accomplish certain goals. And more group-mining activity may occur due to the potential benefit, thus diversifying guild activities w/a side benefit of promoting individual player inclusion.

Wow. Good suggestion. I didn't know you n00bs were capable of such a thing!
everything should benefit your faction like that, i agree. even a thing as simple as mining should do something for your faction. otherwise i don't see many advantages of it, you don't get much money or trade points doing it as far as i can see. but then i only messed with it for a few minutes this morning.
how about some mining missions at the stations. "we need 100 units of blah ore. if you bring them to us you get XXX reward, you will get a bonus if you can do it in YYY minutes."
have the reward be credits and additional mining XP.

CharlieH: A player can earn in a mining expedition close to what they could in a large trade run. If ya have a centaur (48 unit cargo hold) packed with ore that sells for 400+ a unit, that's some decent coin! I haven't done the math/research into the XP benefit yet.
Spellcast: A fine idea. The more variety in missions the better for the playerbase. That will require a user to hunt out the right ore... or draw upon their knowlegdge of ore location(s).
Roguelazer: Thx for the kudos... n00b, perhaps. :)
