non-linear system and in-system jumps and repairs
Some thoughts: How about not making ion storm or jump interruptions occur on the direct line between 2 jump points? In theory one could come back to normal space anywhere inside a system, in any sector. Imagine having a bad jump and ending up somewhere else.
Also a system to system jump could let one exit in like 1% of the case in a totally far off system at random in ANY sectore of the universe. Things could get exciting that way.
Also how about ion storms causing damage to the ship to a small degree. Could be like 2-20% random. I would like to see things be a bit more dangerous. Also how about introducing malfunctions, like battery failure, weapons failure etc. One would have to call another player with a repair kit to get going again. In case of no one helping the player would have to fly back to a station without turbo or weapons. Of course for deseperate case there is /explode.
