Filtering systems

Oct 18, 2004 xf100t link
I know this sounds stupid, coming from someone who can't even play the test right now because of his internet connection, I don't even know if you don't already have this in place... but I was wondering about a chat filtering system. It would block offensive words in the chat box. The principle reason I would suggest this, is becuase it would open the the general crowd that would play this game. What I mean is, parents would let a lot more of their kids play the game if they knew that there kids would not being seeing and reading obsenity.I'm not saying that everyone is just swearing and talking trash all the time, but the parents would have that certain reasurance. I know that most of you believe in freedom of speach, but by putting in this filter, a lot more people would probably play the game. Just a suggestion...

We already have a filter. It's on by default.

Next.

It was a very persuasive argument though.

As pursuasive an argument it is, in the future, it might be advisable to actually play the game before you make criticisms of it.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that it's something of a "dumb" filter. It does its job, but maybe just a bit too well. I think it's just a little silly that when a new player's asking about where whatever feature is located in the ****pit, the **** in ****pit is censored. There should probably be conditions for sensoring. For instance, if a Japanese speakin person is asking about something in the past tense, most sentences end with "mashita" or "deshita," which of course becomes "ma****a" and "de****a." There are of grammatical ways around this, but if a four character combination which in English would be a swear word is an integral part of another language's grammar, it should probably be let through.

if it actually becomes more of a hindrance than an aid, by all means turn it off for a while.

I don't blame xf100t for not noticing the filter; I didn't notice it myself for quite a while, since I didn't cuss/swear, and neither did the people who chatted with me.

I remember a delightful conversation we had once about sharing recipies, and everyone got all offended whenever I recommended Shitake mushrooms.

Which are actually spelled "shiitake"

First off, xf100t did preface his suggestion by saying he wasn't familiar with the content of the game so that made it more of a question/suggestion than any criticism... to me, at least.
Second, the fact that it is a dumb filter it not only blocks legitimate words but it also lets others easily circumvent it. That is why I don't use it.
I am no prude so, if you see me type "ehh hem..." in chat, it's because I don't want something said to snowball. The more swear words that are used, the more others will think it's ok and start using them to insult or personally attack other players.

On the other hand, everyone can swear as much as he wants in his own language, and since vendetta is very international and there are times when almost no american player is online, but most europeans, the chat filter is pretty much useless.

When I say "Arschloch" at 11am CET, I can be sure at least 50% of the players understand it. :)
Oct 19, 2004 RelayeR link
Make that 51%. While English swear words are sometimes the first English words that non-English speaking people learn, German swear words were some of the first German words I learned. :-)

well, besides "kurva" I learned a lot of nice polish swear words from vendetta. :)

Make that 75% for the A*-word then, I already counted some non-german europeans in.

Funny, I don't remember any french words...

Well, it depends on how you meant the "A*" word. In French, there is always the "B*" word.

Well the chat filter was enough to get a Teen rating so its doing okay.

Yeah people can get around the chat filter and if they persist then we mute them or a FM/Dev mutes them. I've seen people use spaces and other symbols to break up words so they can shout obscenities so unless the compuer becomes uber intelligent things are going to bypass the filter.

O_o MoonDog! no bad words in forum because majority of players understand it here too! (just kidding...)

guess if there is a lot of non-filterable flaming/obsceneties going on in main chat, we'll just have to enlist guides that speak all sorts of languages
