Character creation

Mind u i haven't had TONS of time to play vendetta, however i did notice the character creation was a little weak. I know when i play a MMORPG i like to be able to identify with my character and customize a look and feel. Adding in a portrait or even an avatar (if there is ever a time outside your ship) would make the game a more person to person experience as long as keeping people 'attached' to their characters.

well...
firstly, vendetta is supposed to emphasize personal skill over the one you can acquire by playing for hours on end. the devs have stated multiple times that they don't want people to just level up until they reach level x, but rather that they employ their pvp/exploration/trading skills.

as for the avatar, the ship is your avatar. so far you can "only" change the colour of the ship, but i'm sure there's more to come.

I personally like how toned-down character predefinition is, since it allows you to twist and bend your char more than you could if you were "and elven archer who's parents have been slain by human xy in the great elven-human war":

I completly agree Bio,

This is an MMORPG, and as such we need to have an attachment to our charactors, their races history, their appearence. A players charactor is a very special thing for many players with huge sentimental values 8especially to hard core gamers).

atm, the game really does just feel like a FPS, mainly because you just buy a ship, and some guns. I don't really feel any attachment to my charactor at all, since I can't really even put a face to it like you can in many other MMORPG's.

I know VO is trying to make a name for itself in different area's, such as the twitch style combat, but, MMORPG's are the future of gaming, and as such, they need to be cutting edge, I know alot of the longtime players are happy with how the game is atm, but it really does need things like avators and more personalisation, afterall, this is the latest MMORPG to be released and will have games such as WoW as competition.

Best thing to do, is try and play CoH or Eve and look at their avator customisation, that is the standard this game needs to achieve in the MMORPG market. hopefully it will get released in a patch after releace, because atm, the game really lacks any grasp for an RPG'r, it just feels like a FPS atm community wise and also charactor wise somewhat.

At the very least, the nation selection interface needs to have a rundown of who the three player nations are.

Perhaps a compromise? Instead of implementing a full character creation engine (time consuming, especially if starting from scratch), how about the option of writing up a short biography on your character, that appears in the normally blank area on the character information screen? It's some personalization that can be seen by other players, but not excessively hard to implement.

The next step up from that would be simple pictures. Letting the players upload their own might be a bit risky, but it would offer a wonderful chance to be as creative (or not) as they want to be.

Of course, a character creation screen with the same power as, say, the Sims 2 character generator would be the ultimate dream, but I won't hold my breath :P

Especially since you never actually get to SEE your character in-game...

If you let people write their own character profiles, be prepared for vulgarity and childishness.

"MMORPG's are the future of gaming"

....? Are they? The future? HUH! Well, then I guess the unbelievably huge audience for games such as CounterStrike are just screwed.....

Orion_Prime, I make that judgement on the fact that 'alot' of people now use pirated games, or use cd-key generators to play games such as CS for example. The only real way a gaming company will be able to regulate its products successfully, imho, is via monthly subscriptions. Also, with games becoming more and more complex imersion wise, and with more and more games becoming available on the internet, it makes sence to me that eventually MMORPG's will be the way ahead.

Yes, CS has a huge fan base, and can be run via client servers, so it is in no way screwed, however, i did say 'future', not present :-)

In regards to charcator profiles, I believe they are a good idea, even if you do get a few kids been childish, it gives a tool to the rpg'ers out there to Role play :-)

To me, the biggest plus of having avators though, is that you become attached to them after a while, they allow you to become more immersed into the game, which is essential, as a player that is completely imersed in the game is more likely to stay with the game, and when the game relys on monthly subscriptions, getting players addicted and imersed is essential.

I like IRS' idea of being able to write a short character bio that appears under the 'character info' screen. Other players would be able to see it when they target you and hit 'k'.
