Enable/Disable Weapons
hi, i just had an idea when i read the thread about the additional opponent information. Wouldnt it make sense, if players can Enable or Disable Weapons, so you can determine if someone is hostile or not ?
of course, you shouldnt be able to switch them on or off instantly, but how about 15 seconds time to enable them where you cant boost, so an opponent can flee if he sees weapons near him getting enabled.

Why, yes, please. I'd love to chase down 'friendly' traders and then pump them full of ions while they wait 15 seconds for their weapons to enble.
Let the ship with weapons enabled to be visible on radars at longer distance than the ship with disabled weapons.
And also what about making bigger ships to have less stealthness then smaller ships?

Actually, I had this exact same idea posted in a different thread. I think having an enable/disable weapons button would solve a *lot* of problems with IFF (Identification Friend/Foe). There would be no need to enforce a 15 second timer... let me explain why.
Right now you can be attacked and killed by another player or bot who shows up as green on your radar. You can also appear red on someone else's radar while they appear as green to you. This is very confusing. My idea is that *anyone* who targets you with enabled weapons would appear red on your radar until they A) left the sector or B) are destroyed. The reason for this is that you can't really know another player's intents, even if they have low faction standing with you... but if they target you with "hot" weapons, there is a pretty good chance they will be shooting at you. If they target you with weapons disabled, nothing would happen.
A 15 second timer would be easy to abuse as genka points out, and there is really no cause to have one since flying around with weapons enabled basically declares to anyone you target that you are hostile. In fact, when you enter a monitored/guarded sector with weapons enabled, a message could be sent to you that goes something like "Attention Pilot! You are in a <faction> guarded sector and weapons fire is not permitted. Please disable weapons immediately!"
The reason you would stay red to everyone you targeted in the sector with hot weapons until you warped out is that it would be too easy to abuse this feature by hopping back and forth between hot weapons and disabled weapons. However, if you targeted someone with hot weapons for the first time you would remain red until you left.
This system would be a lot more straightforward in identifying potential threats on your radar, and would avoid the confusing situation of being attacked by a green blip.

except that targetting is done client side and for this idea it would have to be transmitted to the server.
