Sector jumping

Jun 24, 2004 Pyro link
Let's say I'm chasing someone, and they jump to another sector. How am I supposed to follow them? It could be one of dozens of sectors, and I don't have any indication as to where they went. Perhaps there ought to be some sort of outfit that lets you piggyback on their jump within a certain range?

Now, let's say I'm the person who's running. It will probably take me a good 10 or 15 seconds to pick where I'm going to jump to. Given that I'm being *shot at*, this is obviously too long, since I'm trying to avoid being killed, and thus need to be able to dodge. What if, however, I could enter, for example "/jump A-5", hit enter, and jump to sector A-5? I wouldn't have to go into the nav system, and I could easily bind it. Much faster, and much more convenient if you know where you're going.

Another thing (muah)... Let's say, again, that I'm running from someone. I'm 2500 meters out, and my distance to large object starts going down. Why? Because there's a random roid sitting 2500 meters in front of me. I try to go up, but there's another in the distance. Down, left, right, same thing. My only option is to go the 5500 meters it takes to go 3000 meters past the roid, and hope there aren't any more. However, by the time I get there, I could have easily been killed. The total distance? 8000 meters. The distance I should have needed to travel? 3000 meters. Almost 3 times the distance I should have needed to travel. Is every roid counted as a large object? In my opinion, at least, it should only be things like stations and extremely large roids (like the one the sector 7 station was embedded in). Those are clearly visible from a distance, and there are significantly fewer of them, so it's not hard to avoid them.

I'm told if you jump near another player, they are informed of your heading. I'll verify this tonight.

Ah, I was unaware of that. I stand corrected.

I can allready verify it. you have to be close (within a few hundred meters) you get a funky little message like
<player X has jumped to <system> [ sector ]

Well, in testing it an hour ago it told nearby players that I had warped to Sol II system, sector B-2. Unfortunately I had actually warped to Dau M-11 from L-11. Katarn has already posted this bug. But, hey, they have the right idea.

What i think would be cool though, because sometimes getting next to someone can be a hassle. Is a device that could tell you where that targeted ship is warping. Now, this would have different levels im thinking, much like engines, so you would have to be a certain distance close to them, to get a reading on how far they go, EG, civilian at 2000m you can see what sector they are warping into in the 5x5 area around the current sector. There be higher levels, but i havnt given it much thought on how to balance it. Another thing to have though, would be jammers, again, with different levels, Civilian jammers would limit the range a Civilian (Subspace Tracker?) can see, or completely jam it, where as the next level of tracker, would have its range reduced, the level above that would not be effected at all. Its just an idea.
::Edit::
Another thing would be if you could hack a system to see where they were jumping to get there before the person you're tracking (A pirate tool), a counter measure for this would be a detector one could buy to say "you're being scanned". Somthing like that. Oh well...

I usually look at the map, click the sector and then set plot course for me.. I still want to know if if people will see the message where the player has jumped to another sector.
