Bypass Skills?
We all know how great (or boring) the new skill/experience system is. A while back, I made the assertion that the final version of Vendetta should have two routes a pilot could take if aligned with a nation--civilian and military.
Currently, the only route available is civilian. You must buy all your equipment, and you have a personal standing with other nations. Individual actions affect only individuals.
Hopefully, we will see the "military" route open up for people. It would differ from the "free will" game play we see now. There would be fundamental differences though:
• Shooting a player without orders (I.E. the mission did not tell you to) would result in disciplinary action.
• You do not own your ships, but are supplied by your government based on your mission (Centurion for scouting, Atlas for ferrying and transport, Hornet for escort, Prometheus or Valkyrie for ambush).
• A loss of a ship is covered by your government.
• A "rank" system would replace the "experience" system. We already see rank based on score, so why not remove that for civilians and implement it for the military?
I do realize this would be exactly like the current missions system, except you wouldn't be gaining "licenses" to have a wider range of equipment, but rather, more dangerous sorties and more prestige among your nation. And then, there's the ship the military supplies for your off-duty escapades... ;-)

Oooh, they should get kill markers on their ship, too... For PKs, at least... :D
There couldn't ever be off-duty escapades because you would bypass the whole system in place that limits civilians. If you chose the military route, EVERY action would have to be taken into account under the military rules. I guess you could eventually get yourself kicked out, at which point your character would revert to civilian rules. Or you could quit with the same results.
In fact, the military could keep track of what your liscense levels would be if you were a civilian. So if you quit or got an honorable discharge, you could start at that level in civilian life. If you get kicked out or dishonorably discharged, you would have to start over.
