Burst engine
I suggest a new engine type.
The Burst engine would need fuel to turbo!
It can fuction the same way as an ammo-based weapon, only it's equipped in the engine slot.
It should have a max speed of 400 or something, but burn fuel like there's no tomorrow. Allmost-instant acceleration.
This should EXCLUDE the use of energy to power the boosting.
Once the fuel is used up the engine is set in flag-carrier-mode and hence no turbo is available. Max speed is set to 60-80 m/s or some other standard cruising speed.
Good for escaping pirates, griefers and bots.
Should, ofcourse, not turbo with flag onboard for the duration of the whole CTF-thing.

Why not have an engine that had a high top speed (60-80 m/s as you say), very high boosting thrust, but be incredibly energy ineffecient (~100 e/s when boosting).
Wouldn't that acheive the same effect without having to introduce a new concept such as fuel?
And then of course there is the whole issue of balancing said burst engine.

ummmm... 80m/s for top speed not turboing!!!! That's the increase over the heavy engine as the heavy engine has over the free one!
what free heavy engine?
oops changed the word order and didn't delete a word
then what "free engine"
You said "...the free heavy engine has over the free one!"
Two free engines?

I agree with Eldrad. Having an engine with a superpowered/ineffecient turbo is fine, but it should sacrifice something in regular thrust/top speed.
The whole point I was trying to make is:
A fast-boosting engine that gets "used up".
Single-burst escape engine.
BTW, there is allready a functional ammo system.
Don't know if it'll work with this, but my guess is that it would.

well intresting concept. Im guessing the idea is so you can escape from someone easier. of course, they would have it too, so they burst after you.....
If there'll even be conic attack from missiles and mines, then there could be a missile weapon that with a HUGE range so that it'll detect when someone is chasing you, with extremely powerful kick that does a conic attack in your ships direction. You could also add a little damage so that its more realistic: a huge boost like that would hurt the ship.
What about the idea of an add-on type system like "Afterburners"...
Afterburners on modern Jet-Fighters are used during takeoff and can be used with reduced fuel effeciency to move fast.
But why not take the idea and add-on a modular Afterburner set? The main engine would provide primary propulsion but in a pinch, the pilot could paddle off the Primary Engine and switch to a liquid or solid (as originally proposed) rocket engine..?
The engine would consume fuel but could push the craft to a sturctural limit and if kept on too long would threaten any of the following:
Overheat (engine auto cuts out until temp reaches green zone)
Meltdown (explosion/issue)
Structure Damage (Light damage (no more than 3%))
Hull Breach (SEVERE Damage, follows Structure, no more than 5% per 5 seconds left ON after, shutting off stops damage and decels)
Over G (Alarms go off, Vehicle takes damage and flight instabilities occur)
Only Meltdown and Overheat would generate any form of explosion or cause the engine to force shut-off. Structure and Hull damage would occur until the pilot manually paddled off the burner. Over G would cause the craft to list left or right slightly and would force pilot to correct every so often.
Overall, I like the idea of a sort of "Super burn" idea but the idea remains that a Valkyrie could carry the same thing and would accel faster than the Cent and thus catch it with energy to spare.

Well.. it always can take large weapon slot :)
