Ship recognition
I was reading about anti-aircraft robots the other day and that has settled into my brain, and as with all other things in my head theese days a vendetta version of it emerged.
Why is it that current technology can tell an FA18 from a A10, but I can't get a ship TYPE from the target?
How can I tell the hull integrety of the ship when I don't even know what ship it is?
I'd like to see a minimalistic low-poly (wireframe?) model of the targeted ship it the top right of my HUD. (option to see just text for our little-endian friends?)
The reason to make it low-poly and even possibly just wireframe would be "realism".
Makes for good split-second desicions in the fight-or-flee category.

It has already been suggested, I think.
Anyway, me likes.

I just use my zoom feature. Just as effective as any complicated scanners you can place in a ship. Sort of akin to the Russian cosmonauts using a pencil while NASA has put so much money into making a pen that writes in space.
love that joke.
here's a political one I heard on the PHC Joke Show:
America has already converted to the metric system, contrary to popular belief...
... they've got a half-liter for president.

OK, screw the ship recognition and let me look around without changing direction and without boosting.
Still think the coolness-factor would be high aswell as realism.

But you can look around without changing direction and during boost. Mouselook lets you do this.

Yes this has been suggested, but without a search feature this must be forgiven.
(Incidentally, the graphite from a pencil can rub off and become an airborne contaminant in a weighless environment. This can become a serious problem with instrumentation because graphite can conduct electricity. NASA isn't so foolish after all.)

on topic: I think he means to look with out having to use turbo Arolte. I don't think there's a way to do that.
on pencils in space: Plus it's a pain in the arse to empty the pencil sharpener in 0 gravity.

on topic: if you press F2 a few times, doesn't it go into that "floaty camera mode" that lets you look around however you want?
pencils in space: how about one of those smooth highlighter crayons?
