Ships names
Well I didn't found similar topic till 6th page, so I assume that nobody cares about it and/or don't post such thing so far.
Now, every modern craft has a unique name (such as "Tomcat", "Apache", "Commanche") but apart from that they have their codenames (F14, AH64D, Mi24 etc).
Now.. in vendetta we have only one ship with a "cedename" - ec-88 (or something simillar :), where the other ships are called only "centaur", "valture" etc etc.. no thats not enought for me :)
I suggest adding a codenames to all ships.. Now it could look like this:
Cr 107r "Centaur"
IV-45 "Itani Valkyrie"
and so on...
If you have such codenames then it would be much easier to make a whole family of crafts of one type. Ie if we have a Centaur with cloacking device we call it Cr 107c, Centaur with expanded cargo area would be called Cr 107t
So what do you think?
Ahh.. BTW EC-88 should have a name... i propose "Noob" :)

The EC-88 is the "bus," and always will be.
The idea of class names is awesome.
The Itani Valkyrie, D Class, etc. Perhaps when engine/battery/weapon upgrades will be uncommon and hard to find, people will want such distinctions. Still a cool feature, however.

Well, generally codenames are determined by the manufacturer, or more recently by the government commission assembled to handle the planning and construction of the vehicle. Actually, I'm planning to write backgrounds for each of the ships and put it in the Vendetta Worldbook. Here's what I have for each ship so far: (editing as I add ships)
1) UNSDF/GSC EC-88 (Adventure)
United Nations Space Defense Force/General Space Construction Adventurer
Yeah, it had to be a GSC. Too ugly to be anything else. It's the space equivalent of the VW Beetle. Manufactured in incredible quantities as a disposable maintenance vehicle, thede durable little ships are as ubiquitous as they are underpowered and helpless in a fight. Often the "bus" is given to new pilots as a training vehicle.
2) UNSDF/GSC EC-190 (Atlas)
United Nations Space Defense Force/General Space Construction Atlas
Also a GSC design. Simple, dependable cargo hauler. The power system has been altered to support heavy weapons, but the hull is too weak to make it an effective fighter by any measure.
3) TPG, inc. Centurion
If the UNSDF and national foundries make ships, TPG, inc. makes ships beautiful. Abandoning the utilitarian designs so prevalent in the early years of the colonization, TPG created ships that echoed the aerodynamic lines of ancient atmospheric craft. While technically a light courier, the Centurion has found more common application as a fighter in the private militias of wealthy individuals with a taste for stylish spacecraft.
Liberty Shipyards H1 Hornet Interdictor
In the wake of the Serco War, the traders so brutalized in the conflict formed a nation and as one fled through the Great Asteroid Belt for new worlds they named Refuge and Profit. These traders realized that they could no longer depend upon the outside world and their fickle politics for ships. Thus, the Hornet was created by a coalition that came to be known as Liberty Shipyards. Though it has currently been relegated to specialized service on national borders, rumored upgrades in weapons and engine abilities hint at a broader role for this ship in the future.
Lady's Grace, LLC Vulture
Most Serco believe that ships are exist to be used, not admired. Lady's Grace, LLC is a group of Serco engineers who fled the Dominion when their refusal to bow to utility caused them trouble. They are loyal to Lady Serco, though their factory is located on the Neutral Territories world of Profit. The Vulture is a unique design in that it is atmosphere-capable as well as an admirable space fighter. The pilot flies it in a foam cradle, lying on his stomach so as to reduce his profile to oncoming projectiles. As a result, the Vulture is very difficult to target when face-to-face with an opponent.

It would be cool to sort of reference where all the non-specials came from as well. But not by nation name. Instead, maybe each nation can have its own popular spaceship company, since it's pretty clear by now that each nation has a distinct design standard that's being followed (Itani = round, NT = semi-sharp, Serco = very sharp). The Centurion, Wraith, Atlas, and Valkyrie can come from one company. The Hornet, Centaur, Ragnarok, and Marauder can come from another company. The Vulture, Warthog, and Prometheus can come from another company.
So rather than assigning each ship a random codename, each company will use its own naming scheme. And maybe take it a step further and make each ship company have a logo that can be presented in hologram form. Think about it. Maybe different stations could sell only a particular brand of spaceship (non-specials) rather than having them all be accessible. Since multiple stations will be scattered around in the same sector eventually, you could give 'em the impression of being something akin to today's car dealerships. Whatever spaceship company logo(s) flashes in front of the station, that's what you'll be able to buy at that station.
Note: The EC-88 (aka bus) will always be available for every station. Think of the company that makes EC-88s as the Yugo of the Vendetta universe.

DAMNIT!!!! ctishman beat me to it! I haaaaate you.

Bwhahaha
I would advise against making the background include any real world companies. They are very protective of thier trademarks, and as such, such work when completed is very much less likely to be useful.
Indeed. Edited. "General Space Construction" was an earth-orbit construction corporation formed by the mergers of three... er... Norwegian companies:
Srotom Lareneg, a former hovercar creator
Yentihw & Tarp, an engine lab
Notrubillah, a materials extraction corporation.

Ok.. but apart from minor issues such as names etc is that a good idea? I will be glad if such new names speaks to you :)
