Some Chat Suggestions

Like many others I often tire of the endless blathering in main chat, so I use multilog. It works great for the most part, but it would be perfect if I could customize it. For instance, if I wanted log1 to have teamchat, groupchat, and PM's, I would do something like /set log1 teamchat; groupchat; PM. (Or something like that). Or I could set my PM's to come to all the channels so I dont miss them. That would make multilog perfect.

My second thought on chat is to create one more chat type (yes, another one): Language Chat. And no, I'm not asking for separate Vendetta clients for different languages (although it might be worth looking into once the game is finished and you are looking for more clients), just a way for players to create a chat channel for speakers of a particular language. The way i envision it working is player A /create LanguageChannel "piglatin" and then other players can /join LanguageChannel "piglatin" and it will persist for, say 48 hours with no one joining, and after that it will close. This would allow those of us who don't speak english as our first language to chat with others without cluttering up the main chat with stuff that only 4 of us can read.
Ok, that's about it : )

I just envisioned the logs we have now would be standard (although it would be nice if client/server notices showed up in all of them) and then we could make up to 4 extra channels to talk into. Maybe an invite only chat channel independant of the /say_group. A language channel, an in station bar that pays attention to what's going on inside your home station, etc.

huh... sorry if I'm confused
but wouldn't channels be the same as joining a group?
say there was a char/bot/thingy called "English" that automatically invites anyone that PMs the bot with the message "invite"
then, it would invite you to the group
you type "/group join English"
and you're in :)

Magus: Well, we could keep the standard logs, but if it wouldnt be hard why not let people define them to their needs? I'm sure the devs have more pressing things to do, but it would be nice later.
Harvest: Yes, exactly like that except that they are persistent and dont need to belong to a player at any time. If nobody used it, it would close and you would have to recreate one later, but as long as once every couple of days someone wants to speak English (or whatever) it would be up... That way no bot would be required. Or maybe they could just make channels for some of the most common languages used that would always exist and wouldnt have to be created... hmmm, what do people think?

Well I think a much more varied chat would be nice. How they do it does not matter to me however.

Make it like a radio. You can "tune-in" to different stations, and transmit as well. This would also allow for signal interception.

But channel 108 maybe be german and 101 may be english, 77 may be faction only, 35 may be ship to ship etc etc

then allow custom logs/groups so you can recieve from multiple channels at once. so Log1 could have up to 3 channels, 101,77,35
to speak to each channel would need a different command though:/ Say_all would send to all or Say_101 would say to channel 101 etc.

Also would be possible for ppl to make channels and make recieve only channels that you cannot transmit to.

Since this is "chat suggestions":
What about voice chats ? Maybe you culdn't voice speak loud (to everyone - 'say') but you could speak in this way to your team ('say_group') of to everyone in sector ('/sector')

Generaly people speaks faster than type, moreover you don't need to pay attention to log space at the top of the screen.. you simply hear what happens

Will the game ever feature voice chat?

We've given considerable thought to the development of an in-game voice chat system, and while it would be of great benefit to gameplay, we've had to push it back to a "possible post-release" feature. Our soundsystem is designed to handle compressed audio streams, and was built with this possibility in mind. For the moment, we recommend that people use third-party voice chat products.
