Hehe, if we could get custom fonts; I could finaly change it to GTS :P

Heh. Food for thought.

A P3 1ghz and a Geforce 1 DDR is still a reasonable minimum for playing the game. It's not the same thing as *recommended*. And frankly, for the whopping $20 difference in cost, I'd just as soon recommend people get a faster card with pixel shaders that has a little more guarantee of longevity.

A Matrox G450 is maybe half the speed of a geforce1? A subjective thing to benchmark of course (speed in other games is not the same as our game).. depending on driver optimizations, available memory, and the lack of hardware T&L. It is, at least, well below our minimum requirements. Hell, we haven't tested the game using our G400 in years.

Producing a font that would be scalable to 320x240 is not impossible. But we never meant for the game to actually be *played* at that resolution, we simply offer all the resolutions the videocard drivers list. At any rate, and rearchitecture of the font setup (which is no small thing) will not be until after the final game is publicly released for sale. We may re-arch that aspect of the game to more easily support internationalization and foreign language portability (asian character sets, for instance), but making things work well at 320x240 will not be our priority. I'm sorry the game is slow for you.. but in order to make it work better for you, we'd either have to make it worse for everyone else, or add all sorts of special-case code and graphics for super low-end scenarios. And neither of those options are very appealing, and both require time we just don't have right now. We have to set a minimum system spec at some point.. it's just a necessity for building a game on a PC (unlikey console developers, we don't have the luxury of knowing EXACTLY what everyone will have), and unfortunately you are below that already-very-low minimum.

The fact that the game runs alright at 320x240 implies your system may be fillrate-limited. You'd probably benefit from any kind of GeForce card.

cosurgi, i don't mean to insult your intelligence or anything, but you said you run your machine 24/7 as a server. Does this mean you have a server process running when you try and play?

okay guys. I revive this thread because I have new things to report.

first of all I still use exactly the same hardware as prevoiusly reported. (dual 600Mhz PIII, matrox G450). And now I can play ventetta under 1280x960 resolution with fps=13 while looking at the station. and average fps=40.

the thing that have changed is matrox driver. Today blender started to have serious issues with graphic, so I looked at the drivers and tried so many times with different driver configurations until blender worked correctly.

Now I have xserver-xfree86 and xlibmesa-dri from debian unstable (newest version), matrox drivers from matrox's site (including propertiary mga_hal.so driver) (latest drivers - one year old).

The thing I want to say is - that my computer after all is not too slow ;) It was just bad drivers.

BUT not everything is ok :>
- With old drivers (terribly slow fps=2 while looking at the station at 640x480) background stars were displayed very fast and correctly (you can read about that in older posts in this thread).
- Now with new drivers (with fps=13 while looking at the station at 1280x960) background stars are displayed uncorrectly.

screenshots of bad background are here:

now, please tell me what to do to get correct background? It is obvoius that I don't want to get back to previous driver - background would be ok but fps will drop insanely.

I want correct background and high fps. both at the same time ;-))

That has happenned to me before. Cutting down the texture resolution fixed it.

I tried changing background details, and texture resolution. I think I've tried all combinations or at least 15 out of possible 25 (or 36). no luck...
