Open Source?
No.
Is there any chance that Vendetta, or portions of it, will be open source one day? I bet that if the admin charged server costs to run the server, the client of the game would be driven by developers from all over the world.
What he said. The plan is to sell the game-engine to a publisher.
YEAHHHH GOOD idea there... Let's open up the client so that the myg0ts of the world can create 1001 cheats for vendetta.
*NOT*

I think it's pretty safe to assume that no online games will ever become open source. Games that are not online are MUCH more likely to become open source, for the simple fact that people are dishonest, and WILL abuse the source code. It's a sad fact, and part of the reason why I migrated to the Linux community.

Parsec became open source and look at it now. Still crap tastic and no one wants to work on it.
Did Parsec become open source?
I looked around and all i could find was a set of binaries that had been compiled in 2000 or something.
And besides, it's not an MMORPG, the only similarities between Parse and Vendetta are that A:- they're both set in space, and B:- They both involve combat.

Ah.. bzflag? foobillard? armagetron? That's just the first 2 games in the menu...The source for the original unreal tournament was turned over to a 3rd party for bug fixes and developement.
Before you blame open source for the reason that online games arent taking off, maybe you should ask yourself how many open source games you recently saw on a shelf for sale in a store...
What's that? None? Why... cause they're free and no one in their right mind would be stupid enough to pay for them? oh... then how does a company make money... oh, they dont.. hrm.. MAYBE THAT"S WHY THERE"S NO OPEN SOURCE SUPER-ONLINE GAMES.

Umm...I'm not quite sure why this has come to shouting, and I don't think that the point was that the existence of open source games is to be blamed for other online games not taking off.
PlaneShift
Great game. My GeForce4 4200 gets 3fps in PlaneShift, even after the devs gave me all the optimization tips.
yeah, roguelazer, the Crystal Space engine sucks, although, i get about 6FPS on my MX400.
Oh, and i think that it is possible to open-source games and still make money from them, just charge for the game and have the source code available with it, it's quite simple. You just have to keep the license-key checking closed, that's all.

I am open-source. I've, as a matter of fact, never released a closed-source application. But I am against openning up Vendetta. Reasons:
1) They want to sell the engine to other companies to make money. They can't do that if it's open-source
2) It would open the game up to TONS of hacks. I won't go into specifics, but all you need is the network code to hack it.
3) It would be hard to separate, because artwork would most likely remain closed-source, so they'd need to restructure media.rlb entirely
4) Any investors that they have might not be quite as interested in investing in open-source...
5) They won't be able to release this game as Microsoft Freelancer Online! :P
