No more sneaking

I'm tired of people sneaking up on me, saying they're non hostile and then firing anyway. I'm also tired of having to press my "non hostile" bind, not even sure if anyone's listening. I'm sure many of you are tired of the first one. We need a way to message each invidivual ship as it comes to a certain range. This would be useful in the full game, when you're in a cargo hauler with some escorts, and you don't want anyone near you. When the enemy reaches the very outter range of your weapons, a message is sent to it saying "Come no closer or we will open fire".

But what if they're just going to dock in the station while you're leaving, you say? Well, assuming stations have a LOT of defenses, there could be a law that says don't fight near stations or we'll destroy you.

Perhaps also the radar can light up a ship orange or something if they come within targetting range.

If we all play dishonest, then this game will only be "kill everyone or be killed". There will be no peace anymore, no trading, nothing but fighting.

My suggestion to you is to be less naive. There are pirates. They are not honest. Keep on your toes. I used to hate pirates when I was trading, too. Now I welcome them. Trading gets incredibly dull when it goes uncontested. And NEVER declare nonhostility. That just screams "Look at me! I have cargo! Shoot me!" Just lay low.

n.u.t.s? I think...

LOL @ zamzx. I'm not even gonna ask...

Hmmm yeah, that's just something you're gonna have to learn on your own through experience. After a while you'll get an idea of how each person is. Everyone has a distinct reputation for doing certain activities, whether it be roleplaying or a reflection of their online persona. And as electric27 says, don't be so naive. Don't let them get so close that they can attack.

Also, don't say you're not hostile. It basically just sticks a big target sign on you. :P

Basicly yes. We are all faced these days with the continued pirate threat and despite recent efforts on the part of the SM, DSG and the SDF, it isnt slowing down fast enough. New players are witnessing this piracy and are attempting (mostly without success) to become pirates themeselves. 3 Days ago some NT newb with a score of zero popped out on my tail in s13 in a Centurion and started poppign Tachyon shots off at my Vulture. I dodged ordered him to standdown or die and he yammered something in Sector-Chat about drop my cargo. I nailed him with about 6 Guass shots and he exploded.

The point is, is that piracy is a galactic problem, 3 guilds arent going to defeat the pirates without help. I've encouraged before the formation of a galactic, multi-national force but those ideas were met with "That won't work"s and "STFU!"s by varying degrees of intelligence in the player.

I suggest to traders that when they are out, fly a nondiscript vessel (such as a Vulture, Ragnorok or Warthog) and avoid using the larger vessels that are often clearly ID'd as traders (Centaurs and Busses) since those are a pirates dream. Avoid braodcasting "Non-hostile" messages because those typically insight violence against the transmittor. And avoid flying too close or far from a target ("Keep your distance but dont LOOK like your trying to keep your distance") and if you ARE attacked, dont run and hide, fight back and call in National Support (your nation may have a guild to COMBAT pirates or a friendly countryman may be able to come to your aid), or call the DSG or SDF enforcement craft nearest to you (DSG is multinational, SDF is Serconian and will defend Sercos, SMs, and on occasion, DSG craft)

One problem pyroman, trading in a vulture makes you no money.

My advice, get a centaur or maud and trade when there aren't many people online. Get to learn who is a pirate and who isn't. Press u as soon as you enter a sector. If you see someone who you know pirates, turn right back around. The best advice, however, is to fly in convoys. Get a gang of 4 or 5 teammates together, have two of them agree to escort using valks or vults and trade in peace.

I heard the prom is good for trading in, if you can get one.

Here's a good tip if you're stuck in a battle: turbo, look behind you (if you see the enemy fire rockets: move up, down, left, right whatever; just get the mouse, move it somewhere else, release tab, wait 0.5 sec, press tab again), also at about half the turbo, switch direction. Just woble your way into safety.

If they attack you with 2 or more: you're screwed. (then again, that barely happens)

heh, I declare non hostile just so i get something fun to do half the time.
Jumping into a sector full of pirates and doing that ensures lots of fun!

Convoys are a great idea, but you hardly ever find anyone willing to do it. I can't wait until NPCs can do this, it will make newbs lives so much easier.

I'll make a new char and help people who need Escorts, this was one of my ideas long ogo, It helped loads of people. I escort someone for nothing If you see me online as "Fighter Escort#1" just tell me you need escort then I will.
Mar 06, 2004 Sheean link
You can also always ask me ('newbie') for an escort, altough I'm a sucky pilot, if somebody is in my way I tend to throw lots of money against the problem...

You guys are focusing on the thread's title but skipping over the main point of grunadulator's post, which as I understand it is "we need to come up with a way to message individual ships."

However, this has been discussed at great length in many other threads, and I feel no need to rehash it. (Someone else be my guest).

That I completely understand.

However, I played Jumpgate - a game Im sure many of those here are familiar with, since early beta, and the forums there too were filled with the attitude im seeing here, an attitude that the developers were sympathetic with.

The dream was for a PvP universe filled with cargo pilots, escorts and pirates. Originally Jumpgate was to have no AI at all. The problem was, and is, because the Jumpgate devs still havnt realized this - and dont have the resources to fix it if they do - that the PvP population is actually far smaller than the non PvPers.

As it turned out, Jumpgate's trading system basically turned cargo pilots into victims for pilots. And soem sort of twisted machismo prevented cargo pilots responding to posts of the form "My suggestion to you is to be less naive. There are pirates. They are not honest. Keep on your toes."

Pilots with multiple accounts, most of which were pirates, made bold statements like "I used to hate pirates when I was trading, too. Now I welcome them."

These pilots, if they are in any way pandered to, will kill the game. Unless that is, the idea is to make a PvP centric game with virtually no civilian traffic.

You can say that this is an egine test. I am not basing these statements on how the game currently plays. I am basing them on the board sentiment, and the proposed feature set, both of which resonate strongly with the early beta days of the "other" game - that ultimately did it wrong.

I feel I need to speak up now :- if there IS to be a place for honest traders in this universe. Most cargo pilots will tolerate one or two acts of piracy, come to the forums and be told to enjoy it - told to enjoy loosing. Be told by players that are quite confortable switching between trade and PvP roles that they should be *excited* by the prospect of loosing their cargo and be reduced to abject poverty again. They will probably, if the "other" game with hardly any people online is any indication - be told that they should pucker up and take it like a man, or leave as this is a game for the strong. And, leave they will.

Leaving a bunch of bewildered PvP pilots wondering where all their victims went.

*That* is what I read in grunadulater's post.

The lessons of history it seems are not learned. This game too - like Jumpgate - will be relegated to total obscurity until this issue is resolved.

LEt me be perfectly blunt. Remove any impression from your minds that PvP piracy can be made to work. It can not.

This engine test IS in total obscurity. Vendetta is not ready for prime-time. That's the whole point of not advertising or charging to play. There are many issues to be resolved. This too will be resolved when it makes sense (from a coding standpoint) to do so. Patience!

I suspect that if piracy is to make it into the final game, it will be very difficult to make a living at it and will have many drawbacks (see posts about reputations systems).
