tilt to accelerate
I recently tried mobile again for the first time in ages, and noticed the strafe up and down buttons baked in to the UI. I found this cool but (for me) hard to use. What I am thinking is that using the control pad highlighted here for four direction strafe.
Then give an option on the tilt config screen to enable tilt to accelerate/decelerate. With options for either forward/backward tilt or side to side tilt. With an adjustable dead zone set by player preference.
For reference, these are the only tilt options shown:
I'm not saying that this should be the default setting, but having the option would be nice.
Something similar was mentioned in passing in 2011.
The primary reason for this is to reduce the amount of position changes of my fingers. This would make dodging a bit easier. Currently if i want to strafe up, i have to move my thumb off the pad and move it the up/down buttons. With this change, i could maintain contact with the pad, be able to maintain reasonable strafe control, and perform some distance control at the same time. All without needing a controller.
I know there are plugins that might do the same thing, but it would be nice to have this in case I ever need to play plugin free.

That was the state of the mobile world eight years ago. Have things gotten better? Even if they have not, with Android 13 getting locked down, offering more configuration flexibility would not be a bad thing right?

I know you acknowledged there might be plugins that can do what you are requesting.
I never fully tested it, but DroidButtons should be capable of binding the tilt axes to any of the joystick commands. While this doesn't specifically address your request, it could possibly be used to test out what you seek and provide additional feedback to support your suggestion.

Tilt to Accelerate has been added in the last update. 1.8.662:
- Added options for Android devices to use the accelerometer tilt to control Throttle. Defaults to off, can be changed in Options -> Advanced -> Controls -> Tilt and is called "Touchscreen steering, tilt for throttle".
- Added options for Android devices to change the deadzone settings of the accelerometer. The settings are also located in Options -> Advanced -> Controls -> Tilt.
