Run monthly duel leagues
I didn't want to derail haxmeister's thread. And this is more of a separate suggestion anyways. (rules 5&6).
Instead of resetting the duel ladder annually, run dueling on a monthly/yearly season system similar to how the English Football system is run. Top duelists would be placed in their top level league. Lower level duelists would be in another lower league.
The the goal is to gain promotion to the top league, and remain there. Each season is a month long. The lowest in the top league get demoted at the end of the month, and the top in the 2nd league get promoted. The top three duelists in the top league get points at the end of each season. These points will determine a yearly dueling champion.
Duels between members of different leagues have no implications on their own league (only on the current ladder).
This system means newer players can move up the the league ladders if they are skillful, and that inactive players will quickly be demoted while retaining their universal ladder elo rating.

I had in my mind the idea of a dueling league.. but I figured it would be too much work to prompt developer action. If this suggestion is in the cards, I wholeheartedly endorse it over my simple "reset ratings annually" suggestion. E-Sports is a huge thing these days, with a giant arena located near me in Arlington TX.. it could be a long term goal to develop the game with compatibility to e-sports competition in mind. Many popular esports games do not even support as many platforms as VO... but besides esports, it's just a really cool idea anyway!
There's a whole pre-existing plan around improving and expanding the entire duel system and other, related mechanics, so this kind of input is beneficial.
I think this would be a useful improvement. On-going feedback is welcome.
This is an aside, but.. In general, please don't worry about how much "work" a given Suggestion would be; players simply don't have any idea what is a lot of work, and what isn't. It's better to just promote the "best idea" and let us figure out the relative-priority, challenges and scheduling.

oh wow.. thanks for the quick reply.. it is most certainly impossible for us to determine how much work is required.. and what an awesome thing to work on this would be. It's such a popular fad among the current generation of gamers.
This is a solid idea. This way people who've spent a long time working on their duel rankings and then take a lapse won't have to worry about losing their rank and have to build it up again.
It would also incentivize (word?) People to compete in duels regularly, especially if there were rewards tied to the season they compete in. For instance, maybe special skins exclusive to the 'league'. You could also make it battle passish where maybe to enter the league you pay like a dollar , or whatever amount ( maybe full sub has it included), where you are gauranteed some type of reward just for participating and then as you progress through ranks you gain better rewards.
You could obviously expand this to more than just dueling, just have all sorts of challenges to accomplish,, though I'll just stop here due to just sticking with the original suggestion.

totally agree.. there is truly no limit to where you could go with this and I think the more you add to it, the bigger it could become.. all the old vets spend a large portion of their time just doing PvP anyway.. it's perfect endgame addition as well as incentive for new players that are geared toward competition.. most leagues have a "handicap" system of sorts.. and one way to do that is mentioned in the OP.. this is necessary to make it winnable by new peeps.. having categories etc.. and we all know that no matter what you do, someone will try to manipulate it.. but I reject that as a reason not to make it happen.

+1. Duels are an underused mechanic, and this would really increase the number of people using it. It adds more incentive to keep up with duel ratings due to ongoing rather than static duel rankings, and also, with Inevitable's suggestion, gives incentive to use /duel rather than informal PvP. I would also suggest a duel category with more than 2 fighters, to enable wingmates in duels. That is of course a serperate suggestion. This suggestion I pretty great as is.
+1. Maybe some badges to go along with topping the ladder for the month?
I would contribute an extra $1 per month on my sub towards a reward for winners like maybe even a free month's full sub!

Players should bring back player-run competitions like the 'Mirror Match-up' of old and other 1v1 events.

I pretty much abstained from offering an opinion (a +1 or -1) for this suggestion since I've really had little interest in dueling.
But I'm curious why the -1, csgno1 ? Player run events aren't being excluded. those can still happen. Is there some reason for being against it? I'm genuinely curious.

When playing other games with ladders and seasons, in my opinion the seasons are always too short for the casual players. Omit people from the leader board if they don't duel for a while but otherwise leave it alone.

This thread is not about the ladder. That was haxmeister's thread. People are already omited when they don't play for a while.
This thread is about an in game competition that doesn't require a player to run it. Sort of how CSR is now run by the game. A league system with promotion/relegation would be pretty competitive and would allow casuals to take part.

+1 I don't duel often enough, but be nice if there were more of a reason to duel. Maybe throw some credits to moving up the ladders? I'd like an idea of a seasonal and yearly and overall ladder of active players that adjusts so an up and comer can win a season then eventually be on top of the overall ladder.
+1 I'm tired of people clinging to their duel points for dear life.
+1 to more duels! more reason to duel! I'll duel any one of you, come at me!
+1 Omw!
